S&P Global Energy review
·
Best for: Desks that need the settlement price itself. Platts assessments are the basis for more than 1,300 exchange-traded, cash-settled futures contracts.
Not for: A team that wants one analyst's cross-market view under one contract. Benchmarks, market data and forecast research are separate SKUs here.
What it costs: Nothing published. Every commercial path ends at “Contact Sales” or “Request a Demo,” and the platform sits behind a login.
The name has changed three times
S&P Global announced on 14 November 2025 that the Commodity Insights division becomes S&P Global Energy. The Platts brand survives the change and still carries the benchmarks.
Before that it was S&P Global Platts, renamed when the IHS Markit merger completed on 28 February 2022. Warren C. Platt started the underlying business in 1909 with a monthly magazine, National Petroleum News; McGraw Hill bought it in 1953.
What a buyer gets
Platts price assessments are produced under a Market-on-Close methodology, with per-commodity methodology guides published as PDFs. Market Data delivers them by REST API, bulk FTP, an Excel add-in and Energy Studio: Impact.
Market Insights is the separate forecasting line, CERA is research and advisory, and Platts eWindow handles physical trade execution with real-time price discovery. The platform that fronts all of it launched as Platts Connect on 25 September 2023 and now carries the name S&P Global Energy Core.
How many assessments, exactly
Its own site gives two answers. The assessments page says Platts publishes “over 12,000 commodity prices daily”; the pricing-and-news page says “over 15,000 commodity prices daily.”
The named flagships are consistent: Dated Brent for physical light North Sea crude, Platts Dubai, JKM as the settlement basis for LNG derivatives and IODEX for 62% iron ore.
Scale
The Commodity Insights division booked $2,142 million of revenue in 2024, $835 million of it in the US and $1,307 million outside it, against $14,208 million for all of S&P Global. Division headcount isn't published.
Pricing
No rate card exists on any page reachable without a login. The Market Data page offers “Contact Sales,” a phone number and a form. A trial-subscription terms page is published, so a trial route exists, but its contents aren't public.
