Where every price, cap and database count on this page came from, and the two figures Raven Tools states two ways
Raven Tools figures come from its pricing page, SEO tools page, keyword research page, rank tracking page, about page and its May 2020 comparison post, all read 17 October 2026. Semrush figures come from its two pricing pages, the Keyword Magic Tool, Site Audit and Backlink Audit feature pages, three knowledge-base articles, and its refund policy (last updated 20 August 2025).
Ownership dates come from Adobe's completion release and Semrush's 2022 SEC filing; Semrush's contract median is Vendr's header figure across 61 purchases. Raven Tools' own pricing page states the Start annual price two ways ($79 in the table, "$99" in the FAQ) and its rank tracking page cites a 7,500-check floor the pricing page no longer sells.
Neither vendor publishes a price for its top tier above self-serve, and Raven Tools publishes no keyword difficulty score, customer count or content-tool ship date.
Semrush wins on data. Raven Tools wins on seat cost. Semrush owns a 28-billion-keyword database and a 43-trillion-link backlink index, runs 140-plus site audit checks and scores keyword difficulty. Raven Tools rents its link data from Majestic and Moz, audits 17 issue types and publishes no difficulty score at all.
Flip to the invoice and the order reverses. Raven Tools' Start plan covers 20 domains and 4 users for $79 a month billed annually, while Semrush's cheapest plan covers 5 sites and one user for $139, plus $45 for every extra seat.
This Raven Tools vs Semrush comparison, which also answers the reverse query of Semrush vs Raven Tools, is written for digital marketers at agencies and for freelancers choosing the SEO tool that will carry their client reporting for the next year. It covers keyword research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, site audits and client reporting, the essential tools an agency SEO tool has to carry.
Every price below was read off raventools.com and semrush.com on 17 October 2026, and every coverage figure comes from the vendor's own domain. It matters now for two reasons: Raven Tools has not posted to its own blog since January 2021, and Semrush moved its Advanced plan from a published price to "request demo" after Adobe took ownership.
↑ COMPARISONWhat Raven Tools and Semrush each sell
Agencies that compare Semrush with Raven Tools usually do it because both carry rank tracking, site audits, backlink analysis and keyword research. Underneath, they're built for different jobs, and buying one to do the other's job is barking up the wrong tree.
Raven Tools is a cloud based SEO platform built around client reporting. It pulls data in from other companies and packages it into branded reports, using Majestic, Moz, Google, Bing and Open Calais by its own description. Raven Tools' 2020 comparison post says its keyword suggestions default to DataForSEO data.
The same post says a user can plug a Semrush or SpyFu account into Raven Tools for keyword data. Read that at face value and Raven Tools is a layer that can sit on top of Semrush.
Semrush is a data owner. It crawls the web with its own bot, stores the results, and sells access through toolkits covering SEO, PPC, content marketing, social media management and competitive analysis. Semrush is aimed at in-house marketing teams and serious SEO professionals, and its competitive research tools double as market intelligence on any domain you type in.
So it's the right SEO tool for a team whose digital marketing depends on finding gaps against competitors. Raven Tools is the right reporting tool for an agency whose deliverable is the monthly PDF.
- Raven Tools covers: rank tracking, a 17-check Site Auditor, Backlink Explorer and Link Spy on Majestic data, a Link Manager for link building campaigns, keyword research on Google data, and unlimited automated client reports.
- Semrush covers: Keyword Magic Tool, Position Tracking, a 140-plus-check Site Audit, a proprietary backlink database, Backlink Audit with a Toxicity Score, AI visibility prompt tracking, advertising research, local SEO, and content marketing tools, including content optimization in a separate Content Toolkit.
↑ COMPARISONPricing math for an agency: three team sizes
Raven Tools prices by domains and users bundled into each tier. Semrush prices by sites and keywords per plan, with one user included and every additional user billed at $45 a month. That single structural difference decides most agency purchases, so the table below runs both price lists against three real team shapes, at monthly rates.
| Team | Raven Tools plan and monthly cost | Semrush plan and monthly cost |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer, 2 users, 5 client sites | Start, $109 (20 domains, 4 users) | SEO $139 + 1 user $45 = $184 |
| Small agency, 4 users, 20 client sites | Start, $109 | Pro+ $299 + 3 users $135 = $434, still capped at 15 sites |
| Mid-size agency, 8 users, 80 client sites | Grow, $199 (80 domains, 8 users) | Advanced, custom quote (40+ sites) |
| White-label reports added | Included; full white label from Grow | Pro Report add-on, $20 a month |
Semrush's price buys a much bigger keyword database and a proprietary link index, so the gap pays for something. But for an agency whose clients read reports and never log in, Raven Tools covers four seats and 20 domains for roughly a quarter of the Semrush bill. In a nutshell, Raven Tools typically offers lower entry pricing, and its per-seat cost falls as the team grows.
Raven Tools plans, from its pricing page
- Small Biz: $39 a month billed annually, $49 month to month; 2 domains, 2 users, 1,500† rank checks, 50,000 page crawls a month.
- Start: $79* annual, $109 monthly; 20 domains, 4 users, 15,000 rank checks, 400,000 page crawls.
- Grow: $139 annual, $199 monthly; 80 domains, 8 users, 20,000 rank checks, 2 million page crawls.
- Thrive: $249 annual, $299 monthly; 160 domains, 20 users, 25,000 rank checks, 5 million page crawls.
- Lead: $399 annual, $479 monthly; 320 domains, 40 users, 30,000 rank checks, 7 million page crawls.
*Raven Tools states the Start annual price two ways on its pricing page: $79 a month ($948 a year) in the plan table and "effectively costs $99 a month" in the FAQ below it. The table figure is used because it is attached to a purchasable tier and matches $948 divided by 12.
†The pricing page gives Small Biz 1,500 rank checks, while the rank tracking page cites allotments "starting at 7,500" and a "freelancer plan (7,500 RPCs)" that the pricing page no longer sells. The pricing-page figure is used.
Annual prepayment saves up to 30%, per Raven Tools' pricing page (accessed 17 October 2026). Every plan allows multiple users, and automated client reports are unlimited on all five tiers.
Semrush plans, from its pricing page
- SEO: $139 a month, $117.33 billed annually; 5 sites, 500 keywords tracked daily.
- Starter: $199 a month, $165.17 annually; 5 sites, 500 keywords, 50 AI prompts a day.
- Pro+: $299 a month, $248.17 annually; 15 sites, 1,500 keywords, 100 AI prompts a day, historical data.
- Advanced: custom, through a demo request; 40+ sites, 5,000+ keywords, unlimited daily AI prompts, API access.
- Enterprise: custom pricing, unlimited projects.
Annual billing saves up to 17%, per Semrush's pricing page (accessed 17 October 2026). Additional users start at $45 a month. The entry plan most comparison pages quote at $199 is Starter; the true entry point is the $139 SEO plan, which drops AI prompt tracking.
Procurement data runs higher. Vendr's Semrush listing puts the median annual contract at $12,480 across 61 purchases, in a range of $4,860 to $56,695 (accessed 17 October 2026). Our Semrush pricing breakdown covers the toolkits and the older Pro, Guru and Business names.
↑ COMPARISONKeyword database, backlink data and audit coverage
The Semrush side of the bill earns its keep here. Every figure below is the vendor's own published number, so read each one as a claim the vendor stands behind.
| Measure | Raven Tools | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword database | 1.4 billion keywords | 28 billion+ keywords |
| Backlink data source | Majestic, resold; up to 50,000 links per URL | Own crawler; 43 trillion+ links, 808 million domains |
| Site audit checks | 17 issue types | 140+ checks |
| Keyword difficulty scores | None published | 0 to 100%, six bands |
| Keyword suggestions per search | Up to 10,000 | Keyword Magic Tool, plan-gated |
| AI visibility tracking | None | 50 to 100 prompts a day, unlimited on Advanced |
Sources: Raven Tools' keyword research page (1.4 billion keywords, 616 million SERPs collected a month); Semrush's Keyword Magic Tool page (28B+) and Backlink Audit page (43T+ links, 808M domain profiles), all accessed 17 October 2026.
Several comparison blogs still quote 1.25 billion keywords for Raven Tools and 27.9 billion for Semrush. Both vendors now publish higher numbers.
↑ COMPARISONKeyword research and keyword difficulty scores
Keyword research is the widest gap between the two. Semrush's Keyword Magic Tool expands a seed keyword into keyword variations, related keywords and question phrases, each labelled with search volume, keyword intent and a keyword difficulty score. The Keyword Overview report adds search intent and trend data for a single term.
Semrush excels at advanced keyword filtering across those key metrics. Raven Tools offers nothing comparable.
Semrush's keyword difficulty runs on a 0 to 100% scale split into six bands, from "very easy" at 0 to 14% to "very hard" at 85 to 100%. A Personal Keyword Difficulty score adjusts the number for your own domain, so the same term can read as hard for a new site and possible for an established one. For SEO professionals choosing target keywords, those keyword difficulty scores are the first filter.
Raven Tools offers basic keyword research on Google's Keyword Planner data: search volume, CPC and an advertiser competition score, up to 10,000 keyword suggestions per search, and unlimited keyword storage with tags. Raven Tools provides basic keyword research but lacks deep historical data, and its own pages never mention a keyword difficulty score.
Style Factory's hands-on review also found the keyword suggestions feature hard to locate inside the app. For an SEO workflow built around picking relevant keywords, that missing difficulty column is a red flag.
Semrush's dashboard puts keyword, backlink and audit data one click apart, which reviewers call user-friendly once the learning curve passes. New users report weeks before the deeper reports feel usable, so SEO performance gains come later. Both are keyword research tools in name, and SEO professionals use the two kinds of keyword research tools for different jobs. Only one is a keyword database you can mine for search traffic your competitors already win.
Domain analysis and competitive analysis
Domain analysis is how an agency sizes up a new prospect, and both tools run one. Semrush's Domain Overview reports a site's organic traffic, search traffic trend, ranking keywords and referring domains from its own data, which is why Semrush provides deep competitor analysis and market intelligence capabilities.
For an SEO strategy built on competitor gaps, Keyword Gap compares up to five domains and splits terms into missing, weak and untapped. That's a ready list of actionable insights.
Raven Tools' domain analysis pulls Moz and Majestic authority and link figures, with rank position, estimated traffic and SERP features drawn from its own 616 million monthly SERPs. Organic traffic for a connected client site comes through Google Analytics. It's a quick and dirty read of the key SEO metrics, enough to open a sales call about a prospect's SEO strategy.
For competitive analysis that feeds a semrush raven tools stack, Semrush's version goes deeper and Raven Tools' version lands in a client report faster.
↑ COMPARISONRank tracking across search engines
Rank tracking is where Raven Tools holds its own, and keyword rankings are what most agency clients ask about first. Its rank tracking page lists Google, Yahoo, Bing, Baidu and Yandex, with checks set to daily, weekly or monthly, zip-code-level local tracking, and separate mobile and desktop positions.
Raven Tools supports flexible rank tracking across multiple dimensions, and it bills each one as a rank position check. Search engine rankings shift with every update to search engine algorithms, so the schedule matters as much as the count.
Included checks run from 1,500 a month on Small Biz to 30,000 on Lead, and Raven Tools bills overage at $0.003 per check. One hundred extra keywords tracked weekly add $1.20 a month, a drop in the bucket next to the plan price. Connecting Google Search Console layers average keyword positions from Google on top of Raven Tools' own checks.
Semrush's Position Tracking measures keyword rankings daily by device and location, with 500 keywords on the SEO and Starter plans, 1,500 on Pro+ and 5,000-plus on Advanced. Its tracked-keyword pool is smaller per dollar, but it ties keyword rank tracking to its own keyword database, so a dropped position links straight to the competitor who took it.
For keyword tracking alone across many search engines, Raven Tools gives more checks for less money. Its rank tracking also feeds straight into its SEO reports.
↑ COMPARISONBacklink analysis and link building
Backlink analysis is the second place the data gap shows, and backlink analysis is where link builders spend most of their week. Semrush has a backlink database with over 43 trillion links, crawled by its own bot. Its Backlink Gap report compares link profiles across competitors, which is how Semrush offers insights into competitor backlink strategies and turns them into link building opportunities.
Its Backlink Audit rates a profile with an Overall Toxicity Score: high above 10% toxic backlinks, medium at 3 to 9%, low under 3%. Flagged links export to a disavow file for Google.
Raven Tools uses third-party data from Majestic and Moz for backlinks. Its Backlink Explorer pulls up to 50,000 backlinks per URL from Majestic, with 20 to 100 Explorer reports a month by tier. Link Spy layers in Moz data so you can view a competitor's links and push any opportunity into Link Manager, Raven Tools' tracker for link building campaigns, where each link carries its status, anchor text and cost.
So Raven Tools provides a Backlink Explorer for tracking link-building efforts, and Semrush provides backlink data it owns. Both tools flag broken links. For anchor text analysis and broken links inside a client's own profile, both are workable; for discovering where a competitor earns links, Semrush's own index takes the lion's share of the argument against a resold Majestic view.
↑ COMPARISONSite audits: 17 checks against 140-plus
Site audits are the clearest count to compare, and site audits are what a technical retainer sells. Raven Tools conducts site audits with only 17 checks. Its Site Auditor sorts issues into visibility, meta tags, content, links, images, semantics and page speed, then produces a health score out of 100 and a checklist you mark off as fixes ship.
Fix advice is thinner: Style Factory's review found Raven Tools refers users to Google Search Central for help with the issues it flags. Audits run on a schedule and compare each crawl against the last. Monthly crawl caps run from 50,000 pages on Small Biz to 7 million on Lead.
Semrush performs site audits with over 140 technical SEO checks, per its Site Audit knowledge base. Semrush provides contextual help for fixing identified issues: its site audit feature page says every issue comes with a tooltip explaining how to fix it. Its site audit tool also includes AI search health indicators and lists pages that block AI crawlers from ChatGPT and Google.
Semrush's crawl caps still carry the older plan names in its documentation: 100,000 pages a month on Pro, 300,000 on Guru, 1 million on Business. For technical SEO on large sites, Raven Tools' crawl volume is generous and its depth is thin. Semrush is the reverse, and its audit flags issues Raven Tools lets slip under the radar.
A site audit feature that catches 17 issue types is a stitch in time for a small brochure site. On a 50,000-page catalog it's a blind spot.
↑ COMPARISONClient reporting and white label
Raven Tools focuses on reporting and campaign management, and this is the section where it wins outright. Automated reports are unlimited on every tier, and Raven Tools enables automated reporting schedules that email each client on the date you set.
Each report can merge several feeds, because Raven Tools allows combining data from multiple data sources into one PDF:
- Google Analytics and Google Search Console
- Google Ads, Bing Ads and Facebook Ads
- CallRail call tracking
- Linked social accounts
White label comes on every tier. Raven Tools offers white-label reporting on all plans, at two levels, and Raven Tools offers the same report builder to every seat. Small Biz and Start get a branded subdomain, branded email and branded reports; Grow, Thrive and Lead get full white label on a custom domain, so a client never sees the Raven Tools name. For managing multiple clients, that's the whole point of the product.
Semrush's reports can include data from Google Analytics and Google Search Console, and Semrush provides intuitive graphs and charts for data visualization. In the Classic lineup, Looker Studio integration starts on the Guru plan. White-labeling costs extra: the Pro Report add-on runs $20 a month on top of the plan, and the Base Report add-on $10.
Style Factory's review calls Raven Tools' reporting basic next to Semrush's charts, which is fair. Raven Tools wins on cost and volume of SEO reports, and scheduled SEO reports are what agency clients open. Semrush wins on how good each chart looks.
↑ COMPARISONWhat Raven Tools says about Semrush, six years later
Raven Tools published "Ahrefs vs SEMrush vs Raven Tools" on 18 May 2020, and it still ranks in the top results for this query. Semrush publishes no page answering it; none of the top ten ranking URLs for this keyword in October 2026 sits on semrush.com.
Here is what Raven Tools' page claims, set against what semrush.com says today. Treat the left column as one vendor's marketing.
| Raven Tools' claim, May 2020 | Semrush's own page, 17 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| "SEMrush plans start at $99 per month, or $83 per month when billed annually." | SEO plan $139, or $117.33 billed annually |
| Advanced features "limited to users on higher-tier plans ($199 or $399 per month)" | Starter $199, Pro+ $299; Advanced is a custom quote |
| White-labeled reporting among features costing extra | Still true: Pro Report add-on, $20 a month |
| "SEMrush focuses heavily on helping users avoid toxic backlinks" | Still true: Overall Toxicity Score in Backlink Audit |
| "Raven is available on a 7-day free trial, and so is SEMrush." | Still true on both sides |
| "Our subscription plans start at just $39 per month (when paid annually)." | Raven Tools' own pricing page: still $39 |
The pattern is telling. Semrush raised its entry price by 40% in six years, while Raven Tools' $39 floor hasn't moved. Read between the lines and the frozen price list matches a frozen product.
↑ COMPARISONOwnership and roadmap: TapClicks and Adobe
A tool you build a reporting business on has to still be around in three years. The two vendors sit at opposite ends of that question.
- 2007: Raven Tools founded in Nashville, Tennessee, per its about page.
- 2008: Semrush founded by Oleg Shchegolev and Dmitry Melnikov.
- 2017: TapClicks, Inc. acquires Raven Tools; the pricing page footer still reads TapClicks today.
- 21 January 2021: the last post on Raven Tools' blog, per its blog index (accessed 17 October 2026).
- 3 August 2022: Semrush sells its two Russian subsidiaries; its SEC filing says the exit from Russia was substantially completed by 31 December 2022.
- 19 November 2025: Adobe announces it will buy Semrush for $12.00 a share, about $1.9 billion in cash.
- 28 April 2026: Adobe completes the acquisition; Semrush now operates as an Adobe company.
Raven Tools' SEO tools page still says the team is "hard at work to add content optimization tools," a promise that reads like pie in the sky after five quiet years. The product runs and the pricing page is current, but nothing public shows new SEO functionality.
Semrush carries the opposite risk: active development under a new owner, and a price list that has already moved once since the deal closed. Our Adobe Semrush acquisition report tracks what changed for subscribers.
↑ COMPARISONSwitching costs and contract terms
Neither vendor makes leaving cheap, and the fine print bites in different places. Leaving mid-contract on either one can cost an arm and a leg.
| Term | Raven Tools | Semrush |
|---|---|---|
| Annual plan | Binding 12 months; upgrades allowed, downgrades not | Up to 17% saving |
| Refunds | None for partial months, monthly or annual | 7-day money-back, initial plans of 12+ months only |
| Month-to-month refunds | None | "refunds are not available for month-to-month subscriptions" |
| Data after cancelling | Kept 30 days, then deleted | Free plan stays available, 1 demo project |
| Payment | Credit card only; no PayPal or checks | Card, direct purchase required for refund |
| Free trial | 7 days, 140 rank checks | 7 days; permanent free plan |
Semrush terms come from its refund policy, last updated 20 August 2025. The cost that matters for agencies is history: Raven Tools deletes rank and report data 30 days after cancellation, so export every client's ranking history before the last invoice. Moving to Semrush means rebuilding report templates from scratch.
The third option: Search Atlas, and the rest
Search Atlas ranks for this query with its own "Raven Tools vs Semrush" page, arguing for Search Atlas over both. That's marketing, the same as Raven Tools' 2020 post. Search Atlas' pricing page lists Starter at $99 a month, Growth at $199, Pro at $399 and Agency at $999, with a 7-day free trial (accessed 17 October 2026).
Search Atlas pitches automation of SEO tasks as its own SEO tool, which puts it between the two: more data than Raven Tools, a smaller footprint than Semrush. Ahrefs is the other common pick for teams whose SEO efforts lean on link building, and like the other SEO tools here it sells keyword research, rank tracking and site audits in one login.
For content marketing features, Positive Surfer covers the content optimization Raven Tools still lists as future work, and our Positive Surfer vs Semrush comparison runs that pairing. Teams weighing Semrush against a traffic tool should read Semrush vs Similarweb. The wider field sits in our competitive intelligence SEO tools ranking.
Semrush vs Raven Tools: common questions
These are the questions buyers ask most about Semrush vs Raven Tools, plus the ones Google's People Also Ask box raises for this pair.
Is Semrush a Russian company?
No. Semrush was founded in 2008 by Oleg Shchegolev and Dmitry Melnikov, listed on the NYSE in 2021, completed its exit from Russia by 31 December 2022 per its SEC filing, and has been owned by Adobe since 28 April 2026.
What are Semrush's main competitors?
Ahrefs, Search Atlas, Similarweb and Raven Tools appear most often, and Search Atlas sells itself as the automated option. Similarweb competes on traffic and market data, Ahrefs on backlink depth, and Raven Tools on agency reporting cost. Our Semrush review covers the full field.
Is Semrush still worth it?
For a team whose digital marketing efforts depend on keyword research, content marketing and competitor data, yes: no other SEO platform in this comparison owns a 28-billion-keyword database. For an agency that mostly sends reports, the $45-per-seat model makes it expensive.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Semrush?
Raven Tools is the cheapest option here, at $39 a month billed annually for 2 domains and 2 users. It suits budget-conscious freelancers and small agencies who need reporting more than research. Our Raven Tools review scores each tier.
Is Raven Tools still being updated?
The pricing page is current and carries a 2026 copyright, but the blog's last post is dated 21 January 2021 and the promised content optimization tools have not shipped. Treat it as a maintained product with a stalled roadmap.
Which is the right SEO tool for managing multiple clients?
Raven Tools, on cost: 20 domains and 4 users on Start for $79 a month annually, with white-label reports included. Semrush caps Pro+ at 15 sites and one included user.
↑ COMPARISONWhich one to buy
Buy Raven Tools if your product is the monthly client report and your keyword rankings work runs across several search engines. It covers more domains and users per dollar than any Semrush plan, includes white-label reports on every tier, tracks rankings on five search engines, and charges a fraction of a cent per extra rank check.
The devil's in the details, though. Its keyword research has no difficulty score, its link data is resold Majestic and Moz, and its roadmap has been quiet since 2021.
Buy Semrush if your SEO performance and SEO strategy depend on research, or if you want one SEO platform that also covers social media management and content marketing. It owns the keyword database and the backlink index for search intent and keyword intent research, runs 140-plus audit checks with fix guidance, handles backlink analysis on links it crawled itself, and tracks AI visibility.
For digital marketing teams that grow, budget for $45 per extra seat, $20 for white-label reports, and a sales call once you outgrow 15 sites.
An agency can also run both: Semrush for one research seat, Raven Tools for the reporting layer, with the Semrush account plugged into Raven Tools as a data source. At $139 plus $109 a month, that's the best of both worlds for less than Semrush's Pro+ plan with three added seats.
