Alternatives to DataForSEO
SerpApi
Not for A team comfortable metering usage per request; DataForSEO's per-task pricing runs a fraction of SerpApi's flat per-search rate at real volume.
Ahrefs
Not for A team building backlink data into its own product; that's DataForSEO's job, and Ahrefs' API access costs extra on top of the seat.
Semrush
Not for A team that only needs SERP or backlink data behind its own product; Semrush's bundle costs more per month than most DataForSEO workloads cost per year.

Sources, and what changes if the vendor updates a number
Pricing, coverage figures and company facts were verified against DataForSEO’s own pricing and about pages, and against fourteen user reviews pulled from G2, Capterra and Trustpilot, in August 2026. The backlink, keyword and SERP database counts are the vendor’s own live counters, reported here as vendor claims, not independently re-crawled.
DataForSEO doesn't sell finished search engine optimization software of its own. Plenty of the powerful SEO software and seo tools other vendors sell runs on this backend, invisible to the end customer.
DataForSEO's own homepage tagline calls it a "Powerful API Stack For Data-Driven SEO Tools," and the pitch underneath is high-quality SEO data priced by the task instead of the seat: Semrush and Ahrefs charge $129 to $299 a month for a login, and DataForSEO charges $0.0006 for one Google results page.
This review checks that pitch against the vendor's own pricing pages, its documentation, and fourteen verified user reviews pulled from G2, Capterra & Trustpilot, going back to 2019. The goal is a straight answer to the question a developer has: what does a real workload cost, what's covered, and where does the API fall over.
It's built for people who already write code: agencies building a white-label rank tracker, SaaS teams adding a keyword-research feature, and seo professionals comfortable reading API docs instead of clicking a dashboard. It is not built for someone who wants to log in and see a graph.
DataForSEO shipped a rebuilt AI Assistant in late 2025 & keeps expanding past classic SEO data into LLM-mention tracking, which is why this review treats it as a data platform first & an "SEO tool" second. The label on the tin matters less than what a request against the API returns.
The DataForSEO APIs, in one line each
The DataForSEO APIs split into roughly ten product lines: SERP, Keywords Data, DataForSEO Labs, Backlinks, On-Page, Business Data, Domain Analytics, Content Analysis, Merchant & AI Optimization. Each is billed & documented on its own, so a team pays only for the lines it calls.
SERP API returns search engine results pages for Google, Bing, Yahoo, Baidu, Naver, YouTube & Seznam, including Maps, News, Images, Jobs, Events & Dataset Search verticals, all as structured data instead of a screenshot.
Keywords Data pulls search volume from Google Ads & Bing Ads, plus Google Trends. DataForSEO Labs layers three keyword-research algorithms & historical data on top of the raw SERP index, returning keyword ideas & difficulty scores for any target keyword, each tagged with a search intent label a team can use to estimate targeted traffic before writing a single page.
The remaining product lines split the same way, each billed on its own:
Backlinks API: referring domains, anchor text & link intersection across nine endpoints.
On-Page API: crawls a site & returns 60-plus on-page metrics per page, among them internal links, broken links, duplicate content & duplicate tags.
Business Data: structured reviews from Google Reviews, Trustpilot, Tripadvisor, Google Play & the App Store.
Content Analysis API: tracks online mentions of a brand across pages the crawler already indexes, closer to actionable insights than a raw keyword count.
Merchant API: Google Shopping & Amazon product data for ecommerce analytics.
AI Optimization Data API: checks brand mentions inside answers from several ai models, treating ai visibility as a line item that did not exist for sale two years ago.
None of these are new categories; DataForSEO sells the raw feed instead of the finished report.
↑ FACT SHEETData source, coverage, and how fresh the numbers are
The vendor's own live counters (checked this run) put the backlinks index at 1,930,870,339,219 live links, with 8,430,423,111 crawled in the last 24 hours. The keyword database claims 8,149,458,730 keywords, with roughly 2.96 billion of those updated in the last 30 days.
That's a real-time claim, not a static export. A G2 reviewer, an SMB CEO writing in October 2025, disagreed on one specific point: "Data quality is not great, specifically search volume data." That complaint sits next to a founder's July 2026 G2 review calling the keyword numbers close: "Its keyword data feels much closer to Google Ads" than competing tools he'd tried.
Backlink history runs back to 2019, DataForSEO's deepest well of historical SEO data today, short next to Ahrefs' longer-running index but long enough to plot a link-velocity chart for most active domains. SERP data updates per-request in live mode, so freshness there is a function of how much a team pays per call, not a fixed refresh window.
↑ FACT SHEETPricing, and the queue speed that triples the bill
The headline number is $0.0006 per SERP task in the standard queue. Priority pushes the same task to $0.0012; live mode, a synchronous response instead of a polled task, costs $0.002. That's a 3.3x spread for serp analysis on the identical query, and the choice is the buyer's, made per request.
Backlinks API prices in two parts: $0.02 to set the task, then $0.00003 per row it returns. A domain-overview pull of 1,000 backlink rows costs $0.05 total, not $20; the row price does almost nothing until volume gets serious. On-Page API starts at $0.00015 per crawled page, then adds charges for extras: $0.00045 to load page resources, $0.0015 to render JavaScript, $0.0051 for a full-page screenshot.
Those add-on charges are where a bill stops looking like the front-page number, so tracking data usage matters more than trusting the sticker price. A November 2021 G2 review from a co-founder & engineer flagged it directly: "The pricing structure can be a bit confusing." Yiğit K., a Marketing & Advertising founder writing on Trustpilot in December 2020, said much the same about an earlier version of the pricing page: "the pricing module was quite complex."
A $50 minimum deposit opens the account, and $1 in free credit lands on signup, enough for rapid development against a few hundred standard SERP tasks before a card is charged for real. Nobody is buying a $299 seat here; they're buying exactly as many requests as the workload needs, which is the entire argument for choosing DataForSEO over a dashboard tool in the first place.
Backlinks API and backlink analysis
Backlinks API exposes nine endpoints: summary, backlinks, anchors, referring domains, domain pages, competitors, domain intersection, bulk metrics & the timeseries views for new & lost links. The domain intersection endpoint is the actual gap-analysis tool here: it shows how a domain's rankings overlap with other websites targeting the same terms, and doubles as a link-opportunities list without a separate product.
Reviewers call the backlink numbers reliable data more often than they flag problems with it. Arul Kumar G., a senior database developer on G2 in May 2024, put the core claim plainly: "Reliable and Accuracy is very good."
Sourav P., an associate growth marketer, wrote the same month on G2 that "the platform's data accuracy and reliability are commendable," & then named a complaint that recurs well beyond backlinks: "the complexity of navigating the platform for users who are new to SEO."
Pricing follows the same model as every other Backlinks endpoint, so pulling backlink profiles for three rival domains costs cents, not a monthly seat upgrade the way it would inside Ahrefs.
Business Data API and business solutions
Business Data API pulls structured reviews & listings from Google Reviews, Trustpilot, Tripadvisor, Google Play & the App Store, returned with ratings, review counts & reviewer profiles attached. It's the API line DataForSEO's business solutions marketing leans on hardest, since it pulls data most SEO-only competitors don't offer at all.
App Data API sits next to it, covering Google Play & App Store search results & reviews for teams tracking app-store visibility instead of web search. Domain Analytics adds technology profiling & Whois data across what the vendor calls millions of domains, useful for a prospect list built from tech-stack signals.
Getting a DataForSEO API key and staying inside API usage
A DataForSEO API key comes from the dashboard after signup: username & password authenticate every request over HTTPS, no OAuth flow, no key rotation dance. A single line of Python is enough to fire a standard SERP task; that's the difference between a five-minute setup & an afternoon reading an auth spec.
There's no hard rate ceiling published; API usage is metered by account balance, and a task that would exceed available credit fails at submission outright. A webhook can convert data into a POST against the team's own endpoint instead of polling for results.
Andrew F., a co-founder & engineer, wrote on G2 in November 2021 that "the breadth of offerings is impressive" & that support "have been extremely responsive and helpful," part of what reviewers describe often enough as exceptional customer support to look like policy, not luck.
Not every account setup goes smoothly. A November 2022 G2 review from an IT-industry mid-market user flagged a real operational bug: the account "charges you the credits but then doesn't deliver them to the webhook," meaning a completed task can bill without the payload showing up where the integration expects it.
↑ FACT SHEETIntegrations, SDKs, and the DataForSEO AI Assistant
DataForSEO publishes official client libraries on GitHub alongside no-code connectors for Google Sheets, Zapier (over 7,000 connected apps), Make, Airtable & Postman, moving data into other tools without anyone writing a parser. Documentation splits across API reference pages, a changelog & stand-alone help desk articles covering edge cases like recrawl frequency.
The DataForSEO AI Assistant, hosted at chat.dataforseo.com, is built to compose & validate API requests conversationally: point it at an endpoint & a goal, and it drafts the request body instead of a developer hand-writing JSON against the reference docs. An OpenAPI schema & ChatGPT Custom GPT Action support extend the same idea into any LLM tooling a team already runs.
Kieran H., a marketing & advertising director, reviewed DataForSEO on Trustpilot in January 2019, years before any of the AI tooling existed, and still landed on the same core claim newer reviewers repeat: "the quality of the data is very good," with support he called "reactive."
He couldn't name a real complaint: "I cannot see any cons." Jan T., a marketing consultant working in market research, wrote on Trustpilot in February 2019 that the APIs were "Easy to use," backed by "Fast support."
What users praise, and what they complain about
Praise clusters around three things: data quality, price against the alternatives & support that answers. Mark G., a technical director, wrote on G2 in January 2025 that the platform is "very easy to use" and, on price specifically, "significantly cheaper than using one of the more famous SEO services." Natalie K., a CMO, put both halves of that claim in one Trustpilot line from July 2021: "Superior accuracy of data, affordability."
Complaints cluster around three different things: UI polish, documentation gaps & a handful of quality misses that reviewers describe in sharper terms than "it's fine."
A February 2025 G2 review from a Computer Software account is the sharpest of the fourteen pulled for this piece: "I paid good money expecting accurate, clean captures... what I got was a mess," with "their so-called support" offering "no real solutions."
Luca P., a COO, described the interface stalling under real load in a July 2025 G2 review: "UI Lag on Heavy Reports...stalls when loading >100K task results."
A Trustpilot software developer's March 2023 review sums up the split best: "User-friendly interface" & "Excellent customer support" on one side, "Limited customization" & "Expensive pricing" on the other, from the same reviewer, in the same write-up. That's the honest read across all fourteen reviews checked for this piece: solid data & responsive humans, next to a UI & documentation set that show their age under a heavy workload.
↑ FACT SHEETCompany stability: bootstrapped, in Kyiv, still running
DataForSEO started as in-house tooling in 2011 & launched its first public API in 2016, per the vendor's own about page. It's headquartered in Kyiv, Ukraine, bootstrapped with no outside funding, and reported roughly $3.2 million in annual recurring revenue as of mid-2025. The vendor's own page states the company puts 50% of its profits toward Ukrainian defense support.
The company earned ISO certification in 2021, which it describes on its about page as the first ISO-certified data provider in the martech industry, and publishes a 99.95% uptime guarantee on the same page. Over 3,500 customers use the platform today, up from roughly 750 by the end of 2020, a six-year growth curve for a company that has never raised outside capital.
For data driven marketers: who this fits
Data driven marketers with an engineer on staff get the clearest win: a keyword-research workflow through DataForSEO Labs, feeding a rank-tracking pipeline through SERP API that plots search engine rankings over time, feeding an executive report built from whichever fields the team cares about, instead of the fixed report Ahrefs or Semrush ships by default. That's data driven marketing built on the company's own pipeline, not someone else's dashboard.
An agency managing several client accounts saves the most on the pricing model itself: 20 clients on Semrush's Pro+ tier runs close to $6,000 a month before add-ons; the same rank-tracking workload against DataForSEO's SERP API, run through a script, can cost a few hundred dollars depending on check frequency.
The tradeoff is that somebody on staff has to build & maintain that script, fitting the API into an existing seo process as one more data source alongside the team's own tools.
DataForSEO vs SerpApi, Ahrefs, and Semrush
SerpApi is the closest like-for-like comparison: both sell SERP data as an API, priced per search, aimed at developers.
SerpApi's own pricing page lists a Developer plan at $75 a month for 5,000 searches, roughly $0.015 each; DataForSEO's standard queue prices the same task at $0.0006, a fraction of that, though SerpApi bundles in a "U.S. Legal Shield" DataForSEO doesn't publish an equivalent for.
The real choice is DataForSEO's lower per-task price against SerpApi's flat plan, easier to forecast on a spreadsheet even at a higher cost per call.
Ahrefs is the opposite model entirely: a $129-a-month Lite plan buys a login, a dashboard & a fixed set of reports, no API calls priced separately. Ahrefs wins for a marketer who wants Site Explorer open in a browser tab today; DataForSEO wins for a team building a product that needs backlink data inside its own interface, since Ahrefs' API access sits behind its own separate add-on pricing, not the base seat.
Semrush runs the same seat-based model as Ahrefs, starting at $139 a month for its entry SEO plan. Its advantage is breadth in one login: rank tracking, content tools & ad research bundled for a marketing team with no developer on staff. DataForSEO's advantage is that the same workload, once someone writes the code, might run a fraction of that fixed seat, priced only for the requests made.
FAQ
How much does DataForSEO cost per request?
A standard SERP task costs $0.0006, priority queue is $0.0012, and live synchronous mode is $0.002. Backlinks API tasks start at $0.02 plus $0.00003 per row returned, and On-Page API starts at $0.00015 per crawled page before add-ons like JavaScript rendering.
Does DataForSEO have a free trial?
No dedicated free trial, but signup includes $1 in credit and a $50 minimum deposit opens the account, enough for a working prototype against a few hundred standard SERP tasks before a card is charged for real.
Is DataForSEO good for someone without coding experience?
No. Every endpoint runs on a task_post/task_get cycle, and reading the API docs is the entry fee. G2 reviewers repeat the same complaint: the platform is hard to navigate for anyone new to SEO who expects a dashboard instead of JSON.
How does DataForSEO's backlink index compare to Ahrefs?
DataForSEO's own count puts its backlinks index at 1,930,870,339,219 live links, with history back to 2019. Ahrefs runs a longer-standing proprietary index; the two also price differently, since DataForSEO charges per row returned instead of a monthly seat.
Can DataForSEO replace Semrush or Ahrefs entirely?
Only for a team willing to build the dashboard itself. DataForSEO ships raw data through an API, not a finished report, so replacing a seat-based tool means someone on staff writes and maintains the code that turns requests into a usable output.
What does the DataForSEO AI Assistant do?
It composes and validates API requests conversationally at chat.dataforseo.com: point it at an endpoint and a goal, and it drafts the request body instead of a developer hand-writing JSON against the reference docs.
Bottom line
DataForSEO is for developers, agencies & SEO tool builders who prefer per-request pricing over a per-seat plan, and who already have someone on staff who can read API docs & write a script against them. The pricing checks out against the vendor's own published rates: $0.0006 for a standard SERP task & $0.02 plus $0.00003 per row for backlinks, both far under what a comparable dashboard seat costs per month.
DataForSEO is not for a solo marketer or a small team without a developer who wants to open a tool & see a finished report. There's no dashboard, and the reviews are consistent on that gap: multiple G2 reviewers flag "the complexity of navigating the platform for users who are new to SEO" as the actual barrier, not the data behind it.
This review scores DataForSEO against our own scoring methodology, not the vendor’s marketing. DataForSEO doesn’t appear yet on our competitive intelligence for SEO ranking; that list scores seat-based dashboards, a model this API deliberately skips. New to buying data infrastructure instead of a dashboard? Start with what market intelligence is.
It might suit a hybrid case: a marketing team with one technical hire who can wire the API into Google Sheets through the official connector, keeping most of DataForSEO's cost advantage without writing a full application.
That path works because the data & support quality reviewers describe (accurate keyword numbers, responsive engineers on tickets) holds even at that smaller scale, though the UI-lag & webhook-delivery complaints logged above are a real risk at that scale too, small team or not.
