Vendr figures are its tracked purchase data, not either vendor's list price; neither publishes one. Corporate finance figures trace to Reuters, Bloomberg, Blackstone's own loan marks and each vendor's public credit ratings. Every figure is sourced in the section its row links to.

Medallia vs Qualtrics is usually written as a product comparison. In 2026 it's a solvency comparison first. Thoma Bravo is handing Medallia to its creditors after a reported $5.1 billion equity wipeout, and the $5.3 billion debt package behind Qualtrics' Press Ganey Forsta acquisition was pulled from the market in March 2026 when investors refused it. Both still ship. Both are why procurement now asks about a three-year term.

This Medallia vs Qualtrics comparison is for the buyer signing a multi-year experience management contract this quarter who wants the owner's balance sheet beside the feature grid. It matters because a voice of the customer platform holds years of customer feedback that doesn't move easily, so the vendor's next twelve months are part of the purchase.

The product split is simple. Qualtrics is a research-grade survey and analytics engine. Medallia is an operational routing engine for frontline teams. Almost everything in a Qualtrics vs Medallia evaluation follows from that one difference.

Ownership and debt comparison: Medallia's creditor group carries roughly three billion dollars of unrated private-credit debt, Qualtrics' 5.3 billion dollar debt package was pulled in March 2026 despite carrying public credit ratings

↑ COMPARISONBoth owners are under pressure, in different ways

Thoma Bravo bought Medallia for $6.4 billion at $34.00 a share, closing 29 October 2021, financed with a $1.8 billion recurring-revenue loan from Blackstone, Apollo, KKR and Antares. That lender group now holds roughly $3 billion of Medallia debt and is taking the company, injecting $150 million of new capital.

Reuters reported the handover in April 2026. Thoma Bravo conceded a month earlier that it had overestimated growth and paid too much.

Blackstone cut its first-lien mark to 60 cents on the dollar as of 31 March 2026, from roughly 78 cents at the end of 2025. Medallia's debt is private credit, so no agency rates it and there's no downgrade to point at. Those marks are the only public price signal customers have.

Qualtrics went private in a $12.5 billion deal with Silver Lake and CPP Investments at $18.15 a share, closing 28 June 2023, then bought Press Ganey Forsta for $6.75 billion, announced 6 October 2025 and closed 18 May 2026.

That deal brought 43,000 clients and 41,000 healthcare providers across 30 countries, the largest single expansion of Qualtrics customers in its history and a real shift in enterprise customer experience market share. Qualtrics now reaches more customers in this category than anyone else selling to it.

The hung deal
$500M

Estimated bank-group loss when Qualtrics' $5.3bn debt package was pulled 17 March 2026 after loan and junk-bond investors cited AI-disruption risk to software. The 2030 term loan fell from about 100 cents to 86 inside a month. Bloomberg called it the largest hung deal in leveraged finance that year.

Neither column tells customers the software will stop working. Medallia's problem is a capital structure its earnings can't carry.

Qualtrics' problem is that the credit market repriced experience management software as an AI-disruption risk, a judgment about the whole category and not one company. Qualtrics carries public ratings, B from S&P, B1 from Moody's on negative outlook, BB- from Fitch, so its platform risk can be measured. Medallia's can't be measured the same way, and that asymmetry favours neither buyer.

Qualtrics also rebuilt its leadership. Jason Maynard became CEO on 3 February 2026, and on 24 April removed five senior executives including the president of products and engineering, the CIO and the CMO. Qualtrics declined to state the headcount affected. The recirculated "780 layoffs" figure belongs to October 2023 and is being relabelled as a 2026 event by aggregators.

↑ COMPARISONWhat each experience management platform was built to do

Qualtrics started as a survey engine for academic researchers and never lost that. It publishes 22 primary question types and "over 100 different ways to ask a question," which makes it the most advanced survey builder in the category.

The iQ suite carries the analysis: Text iQ for open-text coding, Stats iQ for advanced statistical analysis and correlation analysis, Driver iQ for key-driver work, Predict iQ for churn, CrossXM for linking employee and customer signals. Its survey features cover online surveys, simple polls and full experimental designs in one platform. Our Qualtrics review goes deeper on the iQ suite.

Medallia's unit is the Experience Data Record, "all data associated with a discrete interaction between an end-customer (or employee) and a company," and its whole product line routes that record to whoever can act on it.

Under the heading omnichannel CX management Medallia groups Digital, Contact Center, Employee and Market Research as one line. Role based dashboards put a store manager's own customer satisfaction scores in front of the store manager.

Closed-loop case management turns unhappy customers into tickets with owners and due dates. Mindful supplies contact center callback technology for IVR systems, and Agent Connect does coaching and quality management over voice recordings and chat recordings. Our Medallia review covers the case-management workflow in more depth.

Among the similar features Medallia and Qualtrics both ship: text analytics, sentiment analysis, dashboards, alerting, journey data, online review and reputation management, and personalized messaging platforms.

The divergence is in what happens after data collection. Qualtrics is built to analyze data and produce a finding for an insights team. Medallia is built to move that same customer data to whoever meets customers next.

So the buyer question splits cleanly. If the job is large scale measurement across customer journeys and advanced analytics on structured and unstructured feedback, Qualtrics is the research instrument. If the job is operational CX, getting frontline teams to fix the thing this week, Medallia is the routing layer. Both do some of the other. Neither is the other.

↑ COMPARISONPricing: two different meters, neither published

Neither vendor publishes a rate card. Qualtrics' pricing page carries no dollar figure and lists nine sub-products with only a billing metric each: Frontline Digital on digital interactions including survey responses, Frontline Care on "care Interactions including survey responses, call records, chat conversations and emails," People Engage on employee count, Strategic Brand on brand tracking responses and social mentions.

Medallia rejects the seat model outright, stating that "pricing based on survey response volumes or number of users is obsolete." Its EDR tiers include unlimited users along with text analytics, speech analytics, alerting, case management and PII redaction.

Vendr claims Medallia charges separately for text analytics and integrations, which contradicts Medallia's own page. Get the answer in writing before modelling a budget, and price professional services and managed services separately again, because both vendors sell implementation to most customers.

Watch the source

The "$100,000 to $500,000 annually" band repeated across the SERP for both platforms appears on neither vendor's site. It traces only to blogs selling alternatives, and those blogs contradict each other: one reads "$5,000 to $100,000 per year," another asserts a $657,997 average. No shared dataset sits under either.

Vendr tracked contract ranges, February 2026: Medallia runs $6,739 to $112,044 a year with a $13,338 median across 32 purchases, Qualtrics runs $6,910 to $139,920 a year with a $30,000 median across a 211 to 318 purchase sample

Both Vendr pages label the same figure "Avg Contract Value" in the header and "Median buyer pays" in the block below, and mean and median can't both sit at $30,000 across a $6,910 to $139,920 spread. Cite the range rather than either count, and treat the 32-purchase Medallia sample as too thin to carry weight.

A $13,338 median is a departmental buy, well short of the enterprise wide experience management programme either vendor sells its largest customers.

Renewal is where the money moves. Duke University's OIT published its own numbers on 15 July 2024: the 2025 Qualtrics cost would be "roughly 70 percent more than what the University paid in 2024 and 2.5x the license cost from 2023," after negotiating down from a proposed 6x rise over the contract's life.

Qualtrics' published contract pushes term and renewal into the Order Form, which isn't public, so no auto-renewal clause or notice window can be quoted from outside. Its support page says only that "Qualtrics will reach out 60-120 days before your contract expiration date."

↑ COMPARISONText analytics, AI, and what each engine is tuned for

Both platforms run natural language processing and machine learning over unstructured data and reach different conclusions, because they're pointed at different questions.

Qualtrics processes "more than 3.5 billion conversations and interactions a year, including call center conversations, chat logs, survey responses, social media posts, product reviews and more," a figure it says has doubled since 2023.

XM Discover, from the Clarabridge acquisition, carries the omnichannel text analytics capabilities. Qualtrics AI adds predictive behavior analytics and sentiment analysis, and Experience Agents, in production since October 2025, talk to customers directly and resolve issues without a handoff.

Qualtrics reports more than a third of its customer base upgraded to AI capabilities recently, over 90% of its top 50 enterprise accounts adopting at least one, and monthly active AI customers up 346% year over year.

Medallia's text analytics runs on Medallia AI, covering "themes, sentiment, empathy, and nuanced emotions across dozens of languages and dialects" with hundreds of prebuilt models.

Athena is the artificial intelligence layer, offering Ask Athena, intelligent summaries, smart responses and theme discovery to discover data trends across channels.

Medallia's engine leans toward operational metrics like risk scoring over deep analytics, so its AI driven insights arrive as a case rather than a chart. Medallia states it processes "1B+ Signals Processed Per Month," though the same page says a billion comments a quarter one line down.

That decides who does root cause analysis. Qualtrics gives an insights team the tools to prove which driver moves customer satisfaction, then hands a conclusion to the business.

Medallia surfaces the same customer feedback to the frontline manager and asks them to close the case today, in front of the customers who raised it.

A company with an analytics function underuses Medallia. A company without one buys easy reporting nobody reads, which is the shape of the finding that 66% of brands believe customer experience is improving while only 17% of consumers agree, and Medallia's own estimate that 30 to 40% of departments take no action on CX insights at all.

Both are strong at feedback collection and weak at making anyone act on it. That gap is what newer customer platforms sell against, and it's fair criticism of both. Ask each vendor for customers who can describe a decision that changed, over a dashboard that got built. Thematic is one of the AI-native challengers built around exactly that gap.

↑ COMPARISONReview scores, sample sizes and the analyst placements

Medallia scores marginally higher almost everywhere and does it on far thinner samples. That's the whole table, and it sits inside our wider buyer feedback intelligence ranking.

Gartner Peer Insights lists both under Voice of the Customer Platforms, the only like-for-like market here. The TrustRadius numbers people quote are not like-for-like: Medallia's 8.9 sits against a Qualtrics 7.7 belonging to Strategy & Research, while the CX-equivalent Qualtrics profile carries 20 ratings. Comparing those two compares different product lines.

Both are Leaders in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Voice of the Customer Platforms published 9 March 2026, and both were Leaders in the Forrester Wave for Customer Feedback Management Solutions, Q4 2024.

Qualtrics is positioned highest for Ability to Execute and furthest for Completeness of Vision, its fifth consecutive year. Each calls itself a global leader and the analyst record supports both. Nothing in three years of reports separates them.

Ease of setup is where both take their lowest subscore, 7.4 and 7.6, and a steep learning curve is what reviewers name on both sides. G2's tagged sentiment on Medallia lists "Steep Learning Curve" against 6 reviews next to "Ease of Use" against 15. Neither product suits a team that wants to collect feedback next week.

↑ COMPARISONCertifications and security posture

Qualtrics publishes the deeper stack: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, 27017, 27018 and 27701, ISO 42001 for AI, HITRUST, IRAP, and PCI DSS scoped to XM Discover only.

FedRAMP High came on 23 July 2025, with Qualtrics stating it serves more than 350 federal customers, including customers at every cabinet-level department. Its FedRAMP page still carries stale boilerplate naming "EU-US Privacy Shield Certified," a framework invalidated in 2020.

Medallia's trust centre lists SOC 2, the same ISO set plus 42001, HIPAA, HITRUST, PCI DSS, FedRAMP High and CSA STAR Level 1. Its platform runs single-tenant on Medallia-owned hardware in Tier III colocation over public cloud, which some regulated buyers want and which also makes capacity a capital decision at a company whose capital structure is being rewritten.

Neither discloses a security incident affecting its own platform. Qualtrics runs a public HackerOne programme and one status page covering roughly 25 components.

Medallia publishes seven per-product status pages with none covering Experience Cloud, so uptime across the platform can't be read in one place. A vendor that consolidates its status page can be measured; one that doesn't, can't.

↑ COMPARISONWhich platform fits which company

Buy Qualtrics when the organisation has a research or insights function and the deliverable is a defensible finding. Its survey tools, question logic and statistical depth have no equal here, and Press Ganey Forsta gives it a healthcare footprint no competitor matches.

Qualtrics customers who never open Stats iQ are paying for the wrong platform, and Qualtrics users in that position usually discover it at the first renewal. Surveying a targeted group to a research standard is the job it was built for.

Buy Medallia when the primary brand touchpoint is a store, a branch, a hotel desk or a contact centre, and the win is frontline responsiveness over a report. Journey orchestration, role based dashboards and closed-loop case management are built for high-volume operational environments in retail and hospitality.

Medallia customers who run it as a survey tool and never wire up case management have bought an expensive dashboard. The customers who get value from it are the ones whose store and branch staff log in weekly.

Run the same test on both. Instrument one real customer journey end to end in a pilot, then count how many people outside the insights team log in during month two. That number predicts value better than any grid of review features, and neither vendor volunteers it. Ask for it as a reference call with two existing customers instead.

Check this before you sign

Ask both vendors for written continuity terms covering ownership change, and ask Medallia what the creditor handover means for roadmap and support headcount. Ask Qualtrics for the renewal escalation cap in the Order Form, over 90 days before the first term ends.

Common Medallia and Qualtrics questions

What is the biggest difference between Medallia and Qualtrics?

Qualtrics measures, Medallia routes. Qualtrics is research-grade, with 22 primary question types and the iQ suite, sold to insights teams whose customers are internal. Medallia prices on interactions over seats, includes unlimited users, and puts dashboards and case management in front of frontline staff so a manager can close a case the same day.

How much does Medallia cost?

Medallia publishes no price and sells only through a demo. Its meter is the Experience Data Record, priced in annual tiers, with unlimited users, text analytics, speech analytics and case management included. Vendr's tracked contracts show $13,338 across 32 purchases, ranging $6,739 to $112,044, a departmental sample rather than one drawn from its largest customers.

Who is the main competitor for Qualtrics?

Medallia, in Gartner's Voice of the Customer Platforms market where both are 2026 Leaders. Qualtrics also competes with InMoment, now owned by Press Ganey Forsta and therefore by Qualtrics, and with AI-native customer platforms selling against the dashboard model both incumbents built.

Who are Medallia competitors?

Qualtrics is the direct one. Beyond it, the field splits between contact-centre analytics vendors and newer platforms doing sentiment detection and trend identification on unstructured feedback with no survey layer underneath. Medallia's differentiators with customers are the callback and agent-coaching products, which most other tools don't carry.

What are the disadvantages of using Qualtrics?

Cost trajectory at renewal, documented by Duke at roughly 70% year over year. A steep learning curve, reflected in a 7.6 ease-of-setup score. And advanced analytics locked behind paid tiers: the free account excludes Text iQ, Stats iQ and crosstabs, caps you at 3 active surveys, 30 questions and 500 responses, and won't send emails.

Do Medallia and Qualtrics offer a free trial?

Qualtrics offers a permanent free account and a 30-day trial of the paid product. Medallia offers neither; every route is a demo, with pilots negotiated case by case. That difference decides which platform prospective customers can evaluate without opening a procurement cycle.

Which one handles voice and contact centre data better?

Medallia, on the operational side. It ships intelligent callback, agent coaching and quality management over call and chat transcripts as named products. Qualtrics covers voice through XM Discover and its Frontline Care metering, which counts call records and chat conversations explicitly, so both platforms integrate with contact centre systems. The gap is the workflow around the transcript, over the transcript itself.

Figures worth re-checking

Three numbers here will move. Medallia's creditor handover was reported as near-final in April 2026, so confirm the completed ownership structure before signing. Medallia customers on a renewal this year should ask the same question. Both Vendr pages carry a February 2026 date and disagree with themselves on sample size. And the Qualtrics debt package is unresolved, since the banks funded it off balance sheet over syndicating it, which leaves the final capital structure open.

Everything about the products in this Qualtrics Medallia comparison is checkable against each vendor's own pages today. Everything about the owners is a moving target, which is why it belongs in the evaluation and not a footnote.
