AI visibility and Reddit: a 9-vendor citation study
The numbers Social listening AI citations, checked 27 Aug 2026
Reddit's citation dominance holds independent of company size.
The claim that a brand's own backlinks drive that dominance does not.
Mentionlytics proves a brand can earn Reddit citation share with zero backlinks.
Six of fifteen candidates got dropped for real data problems, not convenience.
AI visibility now decides if a brand gets named when someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI Overviews for a recommendation. How often AI talks about a brand, and which sources it leans on to do it, is what separates a citation from a guess.
The working assumption across the AI visibility tool industry, stated on the pricing pages of Ahrefs, SE Ranking, and AIclicks alike, is that getting discussed on Reddit is one of the fastest levers to pull. This report tests that assumption directly, using real citation data pulled from nine social listening vendors on 27 August 2026, and finds a more complicated story than the pitch decks suggest.
Reddit is the most, or near-most, cited source domain in ChatGPT's answers about social listening brands in eight of the nine vendors tested. That part holds up. What doesn't hold up is the causal story: once company size gets held constant, a vendor's actual Reddit backlink count stops predicting anything about how often AI models mention it. The correlation that looked strong at a glance turns out to be a company-size effect wearing a Reddit costume.
This brief covers the full method (which vendors, which platforms, which two data sources), the nine-vendor dataset in full, the statistics that hold up against the ones that don't, and a survey of the AI visibility tools now selling the untested version of this story. It's built for anyone allocating a content or PR budget toward Reddit citations specifically, instead of broader authority and reach.
What the study found
Nine social listening and media monitoring vendors got the same three-part test: how often ChatGPT cites them at all, if Reddit shows up alongside them when it does, and if their own measured Reddit backlink count lines up with either number. Brand24, Meltwater, Talkwalker, Sprinklr, Awario, Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Mentionlytics, and Keyhole cleared the data-quality bar; six other candidates didn't, for reasons detailed below.
Reddit turned up as one of the three most-cited co-sources for eight of the nine, and as the single most-cited source for three: Brand24, Mentionlytics, and Keyhole (tied with Wikipedia). Only Talkwalker broke the pattern, with Reddit landing eighth among its co-cited domains behind its own site, Google, Social Searcher, Mention, and four others.
The rank correlation between a vendor's real Reddit backlink count and its total ChatGPT mention volume came back at Spearman rho 0.73 (p=0.025, n=9), which is the number that would normally end a pitch for "get your brand talked about on Reddit."
It's also the number that collapses once a second variable enters the picture. Organic traffic, a rough proxy for company size and overall content footprint, correlates with ChatGPT mentions at the identical rho of 0.73 (p=0.025). Run a log-log partial correlation isolating Reddit backlinks from that size effect and the result is r=-0.11 (p=0.77): statistically indistinguishable from zero.
Put plainly: bigger, more established social listening brands get cited more by ChatGPT, get more backlinks from Reddit, and get discussed on Reddit more, all as a package. Nothing in this dataset separates a Reddit-specific effect from that broader size effect. A brand chasing Reddit citations as an AI-visibility tactic, independent of everything else it's doing, has no support here for expecting it to move the needle on its own.
What AI visibility means, and who's selling it
The scale explains the stakes. ChatGPT alone counts over 900 million weekly users, per OpenAI's own February 2026 disclosure, more than double the 400 million it reported exactly a year earlier. Usage reportedly neared 1 billion weekly by late July. Search Atlas markets its own tracker by claiming it monitors over 2 billion AI brand mentions a month, a vendor-reported figure this report did not independently verify.
Ahrefs, the company behind the most-used free AI visibility checker on the market, defines the term as how often and how prominently a brand shows up when an AI model answers a question in its category.
The company's own framing on its checker page states that AI visibility "is shaped by your brand's overall presence across the web," and that "the more authoritative sources that reference you, the more likely AI models are to cite you." Ahrefs names the discipline built around that goal Answer Engine Optimization, or AEO: making sure a brand's own presence, and its brand mentions across the wider web, add up to something an answer engine treats as worth citing.
Search Atlas, which sells a competing LLM visibility tool under the name LLM Visibility, defines the concept more narrowly around three things: if a brand appears at all in AI-generated answers, where it ranks inside the answer (first, buried, or skipped), and the sentiment attached to the mention.
AIclicks, a smaller AI-visibility tool aimed at agencies, ties the term directly to a "Visibility Score," a percentage of tracked prompts in which a brand shows up, benchmarked against named competitors in the same prompt set, which is a share-of-voice measure under a different label.
Brand visibility versus AI visibility
Brand visibility predates all of this: share of search, share of shelf, share of voice across press and social media, measured long before a chatbot could answer a product question directly. AI visibility is the narrower, newer descendant. It's specific to a brand's presence inside AI-generated answers, apart from its presence in the wider market.
The distinction matters for budgeting. A brand with strong traditional brand visibility, name recognition, press coverage, category authority, tends to inherit AI visibility as a side effect, which is the size-confound pattern this report's data shows directly. A brand starting from weak brand visibility can't assume the reverse.
A brand's AI visibility, in the narrower sense this report tracks, means citation share and mention volume specifically, apart from brand awareness in the broader market.
None of the three vendor definitions above distinguish a brand mention (the AI model names the brand in text) from a citation (the AI model links to the brand's own domain as a source), a distinction Ahrefs itself draws elsewhere on the same page: a mention and a citation "require different strategies."
This report tracks citation, specifically co-citation: how often a domain shows up as a cited source in the same AI answer that also cites a second domain, which is the level at which "Reddit got cited alongside Brand24" turns from an impression into a countable fact. Total brand mentions and Reddit-specific citation share both come from that same underlying source data.
What determines how a brand performs in AI answers
Every AI visibility vendor selling a tracker in this category converges on the same three inputs to a brand's AI search presence: how often the brand's own content gets crawled and cited directly, how often third-party sites that AI models already trust carry brand mentions, and how big a footprint the brand has across the categories its prompts touch.
That combination is a brand's AI presence in miniature: crawlable content, trusted third-party mentions, and category-wide footprint, no more and no less.
Reddit matters inside that second bucket, as one trusted third-party domain among several. It isn't a separate lever with its own independent effect. That's the theoretical case this report set out to test empirically, and the size confound above is the result.
A different meaning: AI visibility as AI governance
Ask an AI model to define "AI visibility" and a second, unrelated meaning surfaces alongside the marketing one covered above. Enterprise AI governance uses the same two words for the ability to see and govern how an AI system operates: model observability, tracking data flows, latency, and behavior inside a deployed model over time, so a team can monitor and investigate incidents when something goes wrong.
That governance definition ties visibility to accountability. Transparent, well-documented AI systems support regulatory compliance and give affected users a recourse mechanism when an automated decision needs review. Regulatory frameworks increasingly require this kind of transparency for high-risk AI deployments, and users trust an AI application more when its behavior stays visible and traceable.
Organizations operationalize governance-focused AI visibility through documentation and process: model and data cards that record training sources and limitations, ownership matrices that assign responsibility at each stage of model development, and independent audits that surface vulnerabilities before deployment. The same visibility work lets teams debug models and tune performance over time.
The governance discipline and the citation discipline share a name and little else. Governance work checks if an organization's own AI system behaves the way it's supposed to. Citation work, the subject of this report, checks if a brand gets mentioned by someone else's AI model.
The AI visibility tools compared
Four tools cover most of the category between them, at four different price points and with four different emphases. All four publish a rate, though they package AI visibility differently: two sell it as the product, one charges for it as an add-on, one ties it to plan tier. The table below carries what's published on each vendor's own site.
| Tool | Platforms tracked | Distinct angle | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker / Brand Radar | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode | 473M+ monthly search-backed prompts; free one-time snapshot, capped at top 5 results per section | Free snapshot; Brand Radar add-on $199/mo (select platforms) or $699/mo (all platforms, custom prompts) |
| SE Ranking AI Search Toolkit | Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity | 5 free checks a day; live API and MCP access for pulling data into other tools | AI Search add-on at EUR 63.20/mo on annual billing (EUR 79.00 monthly), 200 prompts, on top of a platform plan from EUR 87.20/mo |
| Search Atlas LLM Visibility | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, SearchGPT (Claude and Grok referenced elsewhere on the same page) | Sentiment analysis on every mention, positive, neutral, or negative | Included from the $199/mo Growth plan (2 LLM projects, 3,500 credits); the $99 Starter plan carries none. Pro $399, Agency $999 |
| AIclicks | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI, Copilot (10+ platforms) | Queries platforms through their real, user-facing interfaces instead of APIs; ships a "Build Reddit Mention" action item | Starter $59/mo (30 prompts, 3 platforms), Pro $189/mo (150 prompts, 4 platforms), Business $499/mo (300+ prompts, 6 platforms), 3-day trial |
Prices are each vendor's own published monthly rate, checked 28 August 2026. SE Ranking prices its AI Search module as an add-on and displays them in EUR; Search Atlas folds LLM Visibility into its plan tiers from Growth upward.
Ahrefs's own free checker is the clearest example of an ai visibility tracker built for a single snapshot, instead of ongoing monitoring: total mentions, a platform breakdown, top five cited domains, and top five cited pages, all capped at a preview depth.
The paid Brand Radar add-on removes Ahrefs's free-tier cap and adds historical trends, custom prompt tracking, and one detail worth flagging on its own: it now tracks "YouTube, TikTok & Reddit (free while in beta)" as bonus categories layered on top of its core AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot tracking.
That's an acknowledgment from the largest player in the space that Reddit-specific signal earns its own dedicated feature, separate from general web-authority scoring.
SE Ranking's AI Search Toolkit splits into three named modules: AI Competitor Research (benchmark competitors on presence, split into brand mentions, domain links, or both), AI Results Tracker (position and framing inside a given answer), and AI Source & Coverage Analysis (mapping which domains and URLs, categorized as media, blogs, or forums, carry the most weight across seven markets and five languages).
That third module is the closest published equivalent to this report's own source-level method. It runs at a smaller, prompt-by-prompt scale, and this report's own pull runs domain-wide instead.
Search Atlas structures LLM Visibility around five stages: cross-LLM monitoring, sentiment analysis, competitor benchmarking, historical trends, and what it calls visibility growth actions, closing content gaps and expanding citations once a gap gets found. Ahrefs runs a parallel offering under its Competitive Intelligence use case, aimed at the same brand-versus-rival comparison, run from the traditional SEO side of its platform instead of the AI-specific one.
AIclicks is the clearest example of the untested assumption in commercial form. Its recommendations engine has three action types for improving a client's score, and one of them is explicitly to "join conversations on platforms like Reddit where AI picks up brand signals."
The company runs a dedicated Reddit Growth Services line and a Reddit Growth Guide alongside its core tracker. That's a real product built on the same premise this report set out to test, sold as its own standalone service.
"AIclicks is an awesome solution to identify sources that different LLMs are citing. This helps us to shape our GEO strategy. Easy set-up, clean UI."
Karolis Stasiulevicius, CEO at ScrapingBee, G2 review, 2026.
Competitor benchmarking, tool by tool
SE Ranking's AI Competitor Research and Search Atlas's Competitor Benchmarking both do the same basic job: run the same prompt set against a brand and up to five named rivals, then report the gap in mentions, links, or share of voice.
Neither tool, in the material published on its own site, separates that gap by source domain the way this report's methodology does. A user of either tool would see that a competitor out-cites them without seeing that Reddit specifically accounts for a third of the gap, or none of it.
Google AI Mode, AI Overviews, and the AI search engines each tool tracks
Three surfaces do most of the work in this category, and they're not interchangeable. Google AI Overviews sit inside standard Google search results, triggered automatically for a large share of informational queries.
Google AI Mode is a separate, conversational search experience Google runs alongside the standard results page. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity are stand-alone AI search engines with no organic results page underneath them at all, so a citation there carries none of the traditional SEO signal a ranked link would.
Every tool profiled above tracks some combination of the three, and none tracks a fourth that matters equally: Reddit's own internal search and recommendation surfaces, which several of the vendors in this study cited AI models crawling directly.
AI-generated answers versus AI search results
A generated answer and a set of AI search results aren't the same object. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews still show linked results alongside the synthesized text; ChatGPT's default answer mode often doesn't, which is why "citation" and "mention" carry different weight depending which surface produced the answer.
The dataset behind this report comes from ChatGPT specifically, using DataForSEO's AI Optimization data, which captures the sources an AI-generated response cites when it answers a real, search-derived prompt about a brand or category.
That's a citation-level dataset. It records which domains ChatGPT's answer draws on, a stricter bar than a simple text-mention count of the brand's name appearing somewhere in the paragraph.
The method: nine vendors, two data sources, one control variable
Each of the nine vendors that made the final cut got the same three data pulls, run within the same 24-hour window on 27 August 2026, to keep the comparison internally consistent.
Every figure in this report's AI visibility data traces back to one of those three pulls, run against a real domain instead of an aggregated vendor score. Each pull also recorded how a brand compared to the other domains cited alongside it in the same answer.
- ChatGPT citation data. DataForSEO's AI Optimization endpoint, querying each vendor's domain as a target and returning every ChatGPT answer that cited it, plus the other domains cited alongside it in the same answer. The total brand-mention count and the Reddit co-citation share both come from that pull.
- Real Reddit backlinks. Ahrefs Site Explorer's referring-domains report, filtered to reddit.com as the linking domain, for each vendor's root domain. This counts actual hyperlinks from reddit.com to the vendor's site. A brand-name mention inside Reddit text, with no link attached, doesn't register here.
- Company size control. Ahrefs Site Explorer's organic traffic estimate for each domain, used as the confounding variable to test if "bigger company" alone explains the citation pattern.
Reddit backlinks and Reddit discussion volume are two different things, and this report only measured the first directly. A subreddit thread can generate real ChatGPT citation volume without a single hyperlink back to the vendor's site, which is exactly the pattern Mentionlytics shows below.
That gap is a finding in its own right. It isn't a limitation to apologize for.
Reading the AI responses behind the numbers
Every number in the vendor table below traces to a specific API pull against a specific domain, run on 27 August 2026. Nine vendors, three data points each, twenty-seven individual queries, each cross-checked against the others instead of pulled from a single aggregated report.
Why six of fifteen candidate vendors got dropped
The study started with fifteen social listening and media monitoring vendors. Six produced data too thin or too contaminated to use, and dropping them honestly is part of what makes the remaining nine trustworthy.
Three vendors returned zero ChatGPT citation data in the DataForSEO pull: NetBase Quid, Digimind, and Zignal Labs. None showed up as a cited source for any sampled ChatGPT answer about the category, which is itself a data point about how thin their public web footprint is relative to the other nine, but not one usable for a correlation test.
Social Searcher got dropped for a different reason: its own brand name collides with a generic search category. Its top co-cited domains skewed toward phone-lookup and people-search sites (numlookup.com, discoverprofilepro.com, gps-phone.net) over social media monitoring content.
That's the same contamination pattern that hit Brandwatch, Mention, and Determ during an earlier pass of this research, all three excluded for the same reason: a brand name that also reads as an ordinary English phrase pollutes citation data with unrelated content.
Synthesio and YouScan sat in a gray zone. Synthesio returned only 56 total citations, too small a sample to trust; its top co-cited domains (blog.google, shopping.yahoo.com, craftindustryalliance.org) look more like noise than signal at that volume.
YouScan returned 75 citations with no reddit.com entry anywhere in its top 10 co-cited sources, an absence that could mean a genuinely low Reddit presence or could mean the true Reddit citation count sits below the visible cutoff. Either way, the data wasn't clean enough to fold into the correlation.
The numbers, vendor by vendor
| Vendor | Total ChatGPT mentions | Reddit-cited (share) | Real Reddit backlinks | Organic traffic |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brand24 | 694 | 169 (24.4%) | 4 | 36,497 |
| Meltwater | 1,415 | 173 (12.2%) | 13 | 94,166 |
| Talkwalker | 124 | 18 (14.5%) | 3 | 47,459 |
| Sprinklr | 1,712 | 327 (19.1%) | 52 | 229,149 |
| Awario | 508 | 96 (18.9%) | 6 | 33,809 |
| Sprout Social | 14,648 | 3,535 (24.1%) | 33 | 886,370 |
| Hootsuite | 962 | 161 (16.7%) | 166 | 890,351 |
| Mentionlytics | 204 | 76 (37.3%) | 0 | 5,022 |
| Keyhole | 153 | 31 (20.3%) | 11 | 3,635 |
DataForSEO AI Optimization (ChatGPT, sources scope) and Ahrefs Site Explorer, both pulled 27 Aug 2026.
Sprout Social's scale sets it apart from the other eight. Its 14,648 total citations are roughly ten times the next-highest vendor, Sprinklr.
That tracks with Sprout Social carrying a much broader content footprint beyond social listening specifically, since it's a full social media management platform with a correspondingly larger marketing and support content library.
That single outlier is what erases the raw Pearson correlation between Reddit backlinks and mentions, discussed in the next section, even while the rank-based Spearman correlation holds. See our own social listening rankings for a full head-to-head on features and price across these same vendors.
Reddit's rank in the citation stack
Reddit's citation share ranges from 12.2% (Meltwater) to 37.3% (Mentionlytics), a spread of roughly three to one across nine vendors in the same category. That range alone argues against treating "Reddit citation share" as a fixed property of the category; it varies by vendor for reasons this dataset can only partly explain.
Where the correlation holds, and where it collapses
Four tests, run on the same nine data points, tell four different stories depending on what gets asked. The rank correlation (Spearman) between Reddit backlinks and ChatGPT mentions holds at 0.73 (p=0.025).
The raw linear correlation (Pearson) on the same two variables drops to 0.05 (p=0.89), because Sprout Social's outlier scale dominates a linear fit in a way it can't dominate a rank-based one.
Organic traffic against ChatGPT mentions produces the identical Spearman rho of 0.73 (p=0.025), meaning company size predicts citation volume exactly as well as Reddit backlinks do.
Once that size variable gets held constant with a log-log partial correlation, the Reddit-specific relationship falls to r=-0.11 (p=0.77), a result indistinguishable from no relationship at all.
A sample of nine can't rule out every possible confound, and a genuinely rigorous test would need twenty or thirty vendors spanning several categories instead of one. What nine vendors can do is show that the simple version of the story, more Reddit backlinks equals more AI mentions, doesn't survive the most obvious alternative explanation available in the same dataset.
The one brand that breaks the backlink proxy
Mentionlytics carries the highest Reddit citation share in the study, 37.3%, against zero measured backlinks from reddit.com. Its ChatGPT citation data shows reddit.com as the single most-cited co-source, ahead of Wikipedia, Sprout Social, and Hootsuite Blog. Its Ahrefs backlink profile shows no reddit.com referring domain at all.
That combination only makes sense if people are discussing Mentionlytics on Reddit in text, in threads that never link back to mentionlytics.com, and AI models are picking up that discussion as a citable source regardless of the missing hyperlink.
A backlink count, the metric this report used as its Reddit-presence proxy for lack of a better public signal, would have completely missed Mentionlytics's actual Reddit footprint. Anyone building a measurement framework around backlinks alone, with no measure of actual mention or discussion volume, should expect the same blind spot on any brand with an organic Reddit following that doesn't habitually link out.
Benchmark competitors on AI visibility without buying a tracker
The four tools in this report's comparison table start at $59 a month and the free options cap at five results. A version of the same competitor benchmark this report ran is reproducible manually, at a cost paid in time instead of a subscription fee, using two free-tier tools already covered above.
- Run each competitor's domain through Ahrefs's free AI Visibility Checker, which returns the top five cited domains and top five cited pages per brand at no cost, no signup required.
- Cross-reference the citing domains against a free Ahrefs Backlink Checker pull for the same competitor, to see which cited sources are backed by a real hyperlink and which aren't, the same gap this report found on Mentionlytics.
- Repeat for each named competitor and lay the five-domain lists side by side; the overlap and the gaps are the competitor comparison, without a paid seat.
This manual version caps out at five domains per brand and a single snapshot in time, the two things a paid subscription buys back: full domain lists instead of a top five, and historical trends instead of a one-time check. For a single competitor analysis before committing budget to an AI-visibility push, the free-tier version answers the same question the paid tools are built to automate.
What this means for anyone chasing an AI-visibility story
A brand deciding where to put a limited content or digital PR budget gets a narrow answer from this dataset. It doesn't settle the larger question of Reddit's overall place in a PR plan.
Reddit presence correlates with AI citation volume, and the correlation is real in rank terms. It is not, on this evidence, a lever that moves independently of the brand's overall size and web authority.
A small brand hoping that a Reddit campaign alone will produce Sprout-Social-level citation volume is chasing a relationship this data can't support. A brand already building broad brand visibility, the way Ahrefs's own stated theory of AI visibility describes, will likely pick up Reddit citations as part of that broader effect, with no need to engineer them separately.
The exception worth watching is Mentionlytics's pattern: organic, unlinked Reddit discussion that still drives citation share.
That's a real, low-cost signal a smaller brand could plausibly influence directly, by showing up in relevant subreddit conversations, without needing the backlink or the budget of a Sprout Social or a Sprinklr. It's a narrower opportunity than "post on Reddit and watch AI visibility climb," but it's the one piece of this dataset that survives the size confound.
Enterprise brands with bigger measurement budgets get more out of this kind of tracking than a small team chasing one metric alone. A managed service can turn raw tracking data into actionable insights: brand perception across sentiment-tagged mentions, brand performance against named rivals, and visibility trends charted over months instead of a single snapshot.
Reaching potential customers through generative search means showing up inside AI generated search results instead of a ranked link. A brand's AI search performance across Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and the rest is the plainest measure of if that's happening. Tracking that gap over time is how a brand can stay ahead of competitors on citation share.
SE Ranking and Search Atlas sell the same underlying idea under different labels. SE Ranking ties its module to geo data dashboards; Search Atlas markets straight LLM visibility. Either one gets pitched as an llm brand visibility fix for a team that already owns a broader SEO seat.
Frequently asked questions
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility measures how often, and how prominently, a brand gets mentioned or cited when AI models and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode answer a question in that brand's category. It's distinct from traditional search visibility. That measures ranking positions on a results page; this measures presence inside a generated answer.
The same idea covers every answer engine and the wider set of AI engines now sitting between a search box and a source link.
How can I check my AI visibility?
Ahrefs's free AI Visibility Checker returns a one-time snapshot (total brand mentions, platform breakdown, top cited domains, and the specific URLs an AI answer draws from) in just a few clicks, no signup required. SE Ranking offers five free checks a day against up to five competitors across its major AI platforms. Both cap the free tier at a handful of results; ongoing tracking with full history requires a paid plan from one of the four tools profiled in this report.
How to increase AI search visibility?
The vendors selling AI visibility tools converge on the same three levers: get cited more often by domains AI models already trust, build enough brand visibility that AI models treat the brand as an authoritative source in its own right, and monitor which prompts and topics currently miss the brand entirely.
This report's data adds one caveat: a single tactic aimed at one source domain, including Reddit, is unlikely to move the needle independent of that broader authority-building work.
What are the best AI search visibility tools?
Ahrefs covers the widest platform set (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, AI Overviews, AI Mode) for free at a capped depth, with Brand Radar as the paid upgrade. AIclicks tracks the most platforms overall (10+) starting at $59 a month, and is the only one of the four built specifically around LLM visibility tracking that doubles as an outreach and content tool.
SE Ranking sells its AI Search module as an add-on at EUR 63.20 a month on annual billing, which sits on top of a platform plan starting at EUR 87.20. Search Atlas includes LLM Visibility from its $199 Growth plan upward, with the $99 Starter tier carrying no LLM projects. Both are priced as an extension of a platform seat, so the sums work for teams already paying for that platform.
What triggers Google AI Overviews?
Google generates an AI Overview automatically for search queries it judges suit a synthesized answer, mostly informational and comparison-style queries, without the searcher requesting one. It sits inline within standard search results, distinct from Google AI Mode, which is a separate, fully conversational search experience.
How to track AI Overviews?
Ahrefs, SE Ranking, and AIclicks each run a dedicated AI Overviews tracker, querying a target keyword set and recording if, and how, a given domain appears inside the generated overview versus the standard organic results beneath it. All three treat AI Overview tracking as related to, but separate from, ChatGPT or Gemini visibility, since the underlying triggering logic and result format differ.
What is a good AI visibility score?
SE Ranking's own position, stated in its published FAQ, is that no industry benchmark exists yet because AI search is too new to have established norms. The more useful comparison is relative: a brand's citation share, its share of voice, measured against its named competitors' share for the same prompt set.
Search-visibility.ai frames AI visibility as binary: a brand either appears in a given answer or it doesn't. This report's vendor-by-vendor citation shares argue against that framing. Reddit citation share alone ranges from 12.2% to 37.3% across nine vendors in one category. That's a gradient, not a coin flip.
What are AI visibility services?
Beyond the self-serve trackers profiled in this report, several vendors sell managed services layered on top: AIclicks runs a dedicated Reddit Growth Services line and an AI SEO agency offering, and most of the tools in the comparison table above pair their tracking product with content or digital PR recommendations aimed at closing the visibility gaps the tracker finds.
The payoff for paying is deeper insights than a single free snapshot can offer: full domain lists instead of a top five, historical trends, and a person on the other end reading the citation data instead of a dashboard alone.
Bottom line
Reddit earns its reputation as a heavily-cited source in AI answers about social listening brands, and that part of the industry's story checks out against real data across eight of nine vendors tested.
The part that doesn't check out is the standalone causal claim: once company size gets controlled for, a brand's own Reddit backlink count stops predicting its ChatGPT citation volume in this dataset.
Anyone budgeting for an AI-visibility push should treat Reddit presence as one output of broader authority-building. It doesn't function as an independent lever with its own return, except for a brand whose situation resembles Mentionlytics's pattern: unlinked organic discussion driven by an audience talking on its own, with no deliberate backlink campaign behind it.
Sources, and what the vendors named here don't publish
ChatGPT citation data and Reddit co-citation shares come from DataForSEO's AI Optimization endpoint (sources scope), pulled 27 August 2026. Real Reddit backlink counts and organic traffic estimates come from Ahrefs Site Explorer, pulled the same day.
Vendor pricing and platform claims (ahrefs.com/ai-visibility-checker, seranking.com/ai-visibility-tracker.html, searchatlas.com/llm-visibility, aiclicks.io and aiclicks.io/pricing) were checked 27 August 2026. ChatGPT's weekly user figures are OpenAI's own February 2026 disclosure, reported by TechCrunch, with later figures reported through late July 2026.
Search Atlas's "2 billion monthly AI brand mentions" figure is its own marketing claim. This report did not independently verify it, and says so above instead of restating it as fact. Search-visibility.ai's "AI visibility is binary" framing is quoted to be argued against, not endorsed.
None of the four AI visibility tools profiled here publish their own Reddit-backlink-versus-citation-share correlation. None publish a company-size control on their AI citation numbers. That comparison exists only in this report's own dataset.
