The average SEO will pay $508.95 for one high quality backlink, and 48.6% of the 518 SEO professionals Editorial.Link surveyed for its 2026 report name digital PR as the most effective link building tactic. The same panel says 73.2% believe backlinks influence the chance of appearing in AI search results.

This statistics page collects the key link building statistics that trace to a primary source: Backlinko's studies of 11.8 million Google results and 912 million blog posts, Ahrefs' 75,000-brand AI Overview study, BuzzStream's audit of 257,267 guest posting sites, Aira's State of Link Building panel, and Google's own spam documentation.

These link building statistics are written for in-house SEOs, agency leads, website owners and founders who set a link building budget and need a number they can defend in a planning meeting. Each figure carries its publisher, its sample and its date, because a 2019 outreach study and a 2026 survey can't be read as the same year.

The stakes are concrete: the #1 Google result holds 3.8 times the backlinks of positions 2 to 10, and one top-tier link costs $6,018, so a link building budget built on the wrong figure buys the wrong links.

Backlinks and search rankings: the #1 result holds 3.8x more backlinks

Backlinko's analysis of 11.8 million Google search results found the #1 result has 3.8 times more backlinks than positions 2 through 10. It also carries about 3 times the referring domains, and Ahrefs Domain Rating rose with every step up the page, which is why link builders treat referring domains as the number to grow and raw link totals as a side note.

Higher search rankings follow linking domains more than page-level scores. Pages ranking in the top 6 had a median URL Rating of 12, against 11 for positions 7 to 10, a one-point gap Backlinko calls a weak correlation.

Google confirms the mechanism in its own documentation: "Google uses links as a signal when determining the relevancy of pages and to find new pages to crawl." That sentence is the reason link building exists as a budget line. Search engines read links two ways, as a route to new pages and as a relevancy signal, which is why relevant links from real publications beat volume in search engine rankings.

How many referring domains top ranking pages carry

Internet Marketing Ninjas checked 1,113 sites ranking in the top 10 for 200 commercial-intent keywords, and Search Engine Land reported the results in June 2024. Over 96% of those sites had more than 1,000 referring domains. Only 0.3% had fewer than 100.

How many backlinks a page needs depends on the query. The floor was 54. The weakest site in the sample had 54 referring domains and still ranked sixth, and the lowest 10 sites on local terms averaged 164 unique linking domains.

Ahrefs' study of about 14 billion pages puts the other end of the curve in numbers: 96.55% of pages get zero search traffic from Google. About 20 million pages in its sample had no referring domains, and only 2,997 of them pulled more than 1,000 monthly visits, roughly 1 in 6,671. Search traffic without links happens, but it's a long shot, and organic traffic at scale tracks the number of referring domains in Ahrefs' charts.

That's the case for building links on pages that already rank on page two, where Backlinko's 3x referring-domain gap is the distance to close and the competition on commercial terms holds 1,000 or more linking domains.

Most web pages earn no backlinks: 94% of 912 million posts

Building links starts from a low base. Backlinko and BuzzSumo analysed 912 million blog posts in 2019 and found 94% had zero external links. Only 2.2% earned links from more than one website, and B2B content did no better at 93% with zero links.

Backlinko's ranking study puts the figure at about 95% of all pages with no backlinks. Website owners publishing without a promotion plan are writing for the 94%, a needle in a haystack of other web pages nobody links to.

Shares and links barely move together. The same study measured a Pearson correlation of 0.078 between social shares and backlinks, so a share count predicts close to nothing about the websites linking to a post a month later.

Which content earns more backlinks

Format and length decide which pages earn more backlinks. The 912-million-post dataset breaks down this way:

  • Long form content over 3,000 words earned 77.2% more referring-domain links than posts under 1,000 words.
  • "Why" posts, "what" posts and infographics earned 25.8% more links than how to posts and videos, which makes how to posts the weaker link building strategy of the two.
  • List posts earned the most social shares and ranked last for backlinks.

Content-led link building, where long form content, original research and data do the work of building links, is still the most common link building method in Aira's panel, used by 68% of its 270 respondents in 2022, down from 76% in 2021. Content marketing teams can read the full picture of AI use, budgets and blogging output in our content marketing statistics report.

Link building strategies and tactics SEO professionals use

Link building tactics and link building strategies split differently depending on the question. Asked to pick one most effective link building tactic for 2026, Editorial.Link's 518 respondents split 48.6% for digital PR, 16% for guest posting and 12% for linkable assets. Aira asked a different question in 2022, which tactics teams used at all, and got a different order.

The two link building surveys disagree on guest posting because they measure different things, usage in one and effectiveness in the other. Nearly half of Aira's panel used guest posts; only 16% of Editorial.Link's panel rate them as the strongest method. Most link builders run several link building strategies at once, which is par for the course, so one of the link building tactics can be widely used and rarely rated best.

Digital PR: the most effective link building tactic for 48.6%

BuzzStream's State of Digital PR 2026, published 9 February 2026 from about 150 respondents, shows what digital PR link builders produce day to day:

  • 85.8% say building backlinks is the most effective use of digital PR.
  • About 80% say they never buy links, down from 87.3% in 2025.
  • 32.5% say one team member averages 31 or more links a month, about one per working day.
  • About 60% run a monthly digital PR budget under $10,000, and 25.7% run under $5,000.

Digital PR campaigns earn editorial coverage and quality links on news sites, and that coverage carries brand mentions with or without a link. That second effect carries more weight in AI search, where Ahrefs' brand mention data sits.

Guest posts: 96.2% of marketplace sites rated low quality

Guest posts are the most traded link on the market, and most of the supply is weak, so link building strategies built on guest posts live or die on site selection. BuzzStream started with nearly 500,000 guest posting sites listed on marketplaces and kept the 257,267 with reliable data. It graded each by Ahrefs Domain Rating and estimated organic traffic. 96.2% came out low quality, and only 1.37% reached the high-quality or top-tier bands.

Traffic tells the same story. 39.6% of the listed sites had zero monthly organic traffic, and 78% saw fewer than 1,000 visits. Guest posts on those sites put a link on a page nobody visits, and search engines have little reason to count it. Quality links come from the 1.37%, and guest posts there cost ten times as much. Link quality, measured as DR and real traffic, sets the price.

Link exchanges and reciprocal links: 73.6% of sites carry them

Reciprocal links are normal on the open web, and link builders meet them on almost every site they audit. Ahrefs checked 140,592 domains with 10,000 or more monthly visits and found 73.6% had at least one reciprocal link, and 27.4% had at least a 15% overlap between the domains they link to and the domains linking back.

Google draws the line at scale. Its spam policies list "Excessive link exchanges" as link spam, quoting the pitch itself: "Link to me and I'll link to you." Ahrefs' 73.6% shows mutual links between sites are routine, so the policy's target is link exchanges run in bulk for rankings.

Building links through outreach: 8.5% of 12 million emails get a reply

Backlinko and Pitchbox analysed 12 million outreach emails in 2019. 8.5% got any response at all, and a reply isn't a link. The study measured which changes moved that rate:

  • One follow-up email raised replies by 65.8%.
  • Contacting several people at the same site gave a 93% higher response rate than emailing one.
  • A personalised email body earned 32.7% more replies; personalised subject lines earned 30.5% more.
  • Subject lines of 36 to 50 characters performed best, and Wednesday beat Saturday by 1.99 percentage points.
Bar chart of relative reply-rate lifts in a study of 12 million outreach emails, where 8.5% got any reply: multiple contacts at one site 93% higher, one follow-up 65.8% higher, personalised email body 32.7% higher, personalised subject line 30.5% higher.
Emailing several contacts at one site lifted link building outreach replies 93%, three times the gain from a personalised body, per Backlinko and Pitchbox.

Email a brief

Link builders who use named link building strategies report conversion in the same range. Brian Dean's original skyscraper case study from May 2013 reported 17 links from 160 emails, an 11% success rate. Personalising every email is easier said than done at that volume. Broken link building runs on the same arithmetic: find a dead page with links pointing at it, offer a working replacement, and expect most emails to go unanswered.

The time cost adds up. Aira's 2022 panel most often reported spending 1 to 2 hours per link (32%), with 3 to 5 hours per link the next answer at 24%. At the skyscraper case's 11% rate, link building efforts built on cold email need about 110 sends to land a dozen placements.

Link building costs: $295 guest posts to $8,406 monthly budgets

Link building costs start with the price per link, and acquiring links of real quality sets the floor. Editorial.Link's panel put the average acceptable price for acquiring links of high quality at $508.95 each. BuzzStream's guest post data shows how wide the spread runs once the quality bar moves.

Bar chart of link prices: a guest post bought direct from the site costs $295 on average and $461 through a vendor, SEOs call $508.95 an acceptable price for one link, a high-quality site costs $3,130 through a vendor and a top-tier site costs $6,018.
A top-tier guest post costs 20 times the average direct price, per BuzzStream's 257,267-site study.

BuzzStream's guest post averages, published August 2025 and updated June 2026:

  • $295 for a guest post bought direct from the site.
  • $461 through a vendor.
  • $3,130 for a high-quality site, DR 71 to 80 with 50,000+ monthly visits.
  • $6,018 for a top-tier site, DR 81+ with 100,000+ visits.

A quality backlink on a site with real traffic costs six to twelve times the $508.95 most SEOs say they'll pay, so high quality backlinks cost an arm and a leg next to the marketplace average. Link quality is what the extra money buys: DR 71+ and 50,000 or more monthly visits.

Digital PR link building prices by campaign. Editorial.Link's January 2024 survey of 12 digital PR agencies, published on its link building pricing page, found campaigns cost $6,000 to $20,000 and yield 10 to 40 editorial mentions each.

Link building budget by month

Editorial.Link puts the average minimum monthly link building budget for highly competitive niches at $8,406, with answers ranging from $4,000 to $150,000. Aira's 2022 in-house panel most often reported an external budget of $10,000 to $25,000 a month (25%), followed by $2,500 to $5,000 (19%).

Niche sets the price. 61.0% of Editorial.Link's respondents say gambling needs the highest link building budgets, ahead of finance at 18.4% and law at 16.4%. Earning backlinks in finance and law costs more, and the survey's budget answers price that in.

Advertisers pay for the same intent. Google Ads data pulled through DataForSEO on 15 October 2026 shows a $45.96 cost per click on "link building services" in the US and $44.36 on "buy backlinks". Teams pricing high quality backlinks against software can check the SEO tools pricing report, which covers the software side of the bill, from $0 to $74,200 a year across 16 vendors.

Paid links and Google's link spam policy

91.9% of Editorial.Link's respondents believe their competitors buy backlinks, which puts paid links on nine in ten SEOs' list of competitor link building tactics. The rules are written by the major search engines themselves. Google's position is in writing: its spam policies define link spam as "creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings" and list "Buying or selling links for ranking purposes" first.

Enforcement is automated. Google's December 2022 link spam update, announced 14 December 2022 with a two-week rollout, extended SpamBrain so it can "detect both sites buying links, and sites used for the purpose of passing outgoing links." Google's announcement spelled out the result: "Ranking may change as spammy links are neutralized and any credit passed by these unnatural links are lost." The money spent on those links is gone.

A paid link marked correctly isn't a violation. The same Google link documentation quoted above says "If you were paid in some way for the link, qualify these links with sponsored or nofollow." That makes nofollow links a disclosure tool, and SEOs still credit them with weight: 78.8% of Editorial.Link's panel think nofollow links impact rankings, and 62% of Aira's 2022 panel counted nofollow, sponsored and UGC links toward their link target.

Google has also said links count for less than they used to. Gary Illyes told a search conference in Bulgaria in April 2024 that "We need very few links to rank pages," adding "Over the years we've made links less important," according to a 22 April 2024 report in Search Engine Journal.

Backlinko's 3.8x gap and the 1,000-domain average on commercial terms say the few links still have to be quality links from relevant sites, and more backlinks from weak sites add little. Buying links in bulk is skating on thin ice with a search engine that counts fewer of them each year. Google's policy targets links created to manipulate rankings, and quality links earned through editorial coverage sit outside that definition.

Backlinks and AI search: 73.2% of SEOs see an influence

73.2% of Editorial.Link's 518 respondents believe backlinks influence the chance of appearing in AI search results. Ahrefs measured it. Its May 2025 study of 75,000 brands found branded web mentions correlate with AI Overview visibility at 0.664, three times the 0.218 for raw backlink count.

Bar chart of Spearman correlations with brand visibility in Google AI Overviews: branded web mentions 0.664, branded anchors 0.527, branded search volume 0.392, Domain Rating 0.326, referring domains 0.295, number of backlinks 0.218, number of site pages 0.17.
Brand mentions track AI Overview visibility three times as closely as backlink counts in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study.

Mentions take the lion's share of the signal. The ranking runs branded web mentions 0.664, branded anchors 0.527, branded search volume 0.392, Domain Rating 0.326, referring domains 0.295, backlinks 0.218 and site pages 0.17. Ahrefs notes correlation isn't causation. Still, the order says brand mentions and links combined beat links alone, and backlinks remain part of the signal through anchors and Domain Rating.

Practitioners already fold mentions into their link building strategies. 80.9% of Editorial.Link's panel believe unlinked brand mentions affect organic search rankings, and 80% of Aira's 2022 panel said the same. In BuzzStream's 2026 digital PR survey, 76.4% say AI has changed how they work, and 78.4% track AI visibility for clients, with Ahrefs Brand Radar the most-used tool at 52%.

The traffic AI engines send is still small next to Google search. Our AI traffic report measures how much referral traffic AI tools drive, and the competitive intelligence tools for SEO ranking compares the platforms that track AI citations.

Link building efforts: KPIs, timelines and tools

Rankings are the primary link building KPI. Aira's 2022 panel picked rankings first at 53% and search visibility second at 36%, choosing up to three answers. Link building reports lead with keyword positions for that reason, and teams keep an eye on link counts second.

Link building timelines are short in theory, and building links that move rankings takes longer in practice. 57.1% of Editorial.Link's respondents expect results within 1 to 3 months, 33.0% within 3 to 6 months, 6.0% within a month and 3.9% after more than 6 months, so 96.1% expect ranking improvements inside six months. 52.9% say measuring ROI and effectiveness is hard.

Bar chart of when SEO professionals expect link building results: 6.0% within a month, 57.1% in 1 to 3 months, 33.0% in 3 to 6 months and 3.9% after more than 6 months, from Editorial.Link's survey of 518.
96.1% of SEO professionals expect link building to show results within six months.

The link building tools market is concentrated, and the same two link building tools dominate both surveys:

  • Ahrefs is the top all-in-one SEO tool for 59.1% of Editorial.Link's panel, Semrush for 28.2%.
  • 64.1% would pick Ahrefs' Domain Rating as their single authority metric; Semrush's Authority Score gets 15.4%.
  • In Aira's 2022 panel, 82% used Ahrefs, 60% used Google Sheets and 56% used Semrush for link building.
  • 14% of Aira's panel rated Google Search Console the most reliable link data, behind Ahrefs at 64%.

Our Semrush review covers its backlink database and Authority Score, and the DataForSEO review covers the backlink API that link building platforms build on.

Internal links are the cheapest links a site controls. Google's link documentation keeps the rule short: "Every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your site." It also asks for descriptive anchor text.

Fixing broken internal links and pointing internal links at the page you're building external links to costs nothing per link, and internal links pass relevance the same way external links do. A stitch in time saves nine, and an orphaned page wastes every external link aimed at it, so audit internal links before any link building campaign starts.

Link building challenges reported by SEO professionals

Editorial.Link asks which part of SEO is hardest, and leaves the most valuable SEO tactic unasked. 55.2% of its respondents call link building the hardest part of SEO. The biggest single obstacle is price: 75.1% name the high cost of premium backlinks.

Costs are expected to rise. 80.9% believe link building will get harder and more expensive over the next 2 to 3 years, and 46% of Aira's 2022 in-house panel planned to increase their link building budget the following year, with 43% expecting it to hold flat.

In-house teams chose to outsource link building less often: 64% used no external agency, freelancer or contractor in 2022, up from 56% in 2021, so link building services sold to in-house SEO professionals lost ground that year.

Some SEO professionals doubt links are required at all. 64.9% of Editorial.Link's panel say a website can rank high on Google without backlinks, the strongest counterpoint in the data. Ahrefs' 1-in-6,671 figure for zero-link pages with real traffic shows how rare that is in practice.

Link building trends: search interest up fourfold since 2022

Google Trends data pulled through DataForSEO on 11 October 2026 shows worldwide interest in link building averaged 16.5 points a week across 2022 and 65.5 from 4 January to 10 October 2026. Digital PR rose from 7.8 to 32.4, and guest post from 6.0 to 32.2.

Bar chart of average weekly Google Trends interest, worldwide: link building 16.5 in 2022 and 65.5 in 2026, digital PR 7.8 and 32.4, guest post 6.0 and 32.2.
Search interest in all three link building terms rose four- to fivefold between 2022 and 2026.

The peak week for link building, scored 100, ran from 30 November 2025. Google Trends is a relative index, so absolute demand comes from Google Ads data, which puts "link building" at 1,900 US searches a month and "backlinks" at 4,400.

Buyers have jumped on the bandwagon. More people are searching for link building services while Google says links matter less and AI search shifts weight toward mentions, the condition the Google search statistics report tracks from the click side.

Why published link building statistics diverge

Link building statistics disagree because the sources measure different populations, at different dates, with different questions. A 2019 study of 12 million emails, a 2022 panel of 270 SEOs and a 2026 survey of 518 can each be accurate and still produce three different pictures of the link building industry.

Market size: $2.8 billion measured against $25.97 billion derived

Dataintelo's Link Building Software Market Research Report values link building software at $2.8 billion in 2025, rising to $7.1 billion by 2034 at a 10.9% CAGR.

The larger figure in circulation, $25.97 billion for link building services in 2025 and about $57 billion by 2030, comes from a calculation.

Xamsor applies a 28% link building share of SEO budgets to a $92.74 billion SEO market, then repeats the method on a $203.83 billion 2030 forecast. It's an estimate built on two assumptions, and the devil's in the details: change the 28% share to Aira's most common in-house answer, under 10% of SEO budget, and the figure falls below $9.3 billion.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 80/20 rule in SEO?

The 80/20 rule in SEO says a small share of pages and actions produces most results, and link building statistics bear it out. Link data fits it: only 2.2% of 912 million posts earned links from more than one website, so a handful of linkable pages collects most of a site's referring domains.

What are the most effective link building strategies for 2026?

Among the link building statistics 2026 surveys published, digital PR leads at 48.6% in Editorial.Link's 2026 survey, ahead of guest posting at 16% and linkable assets at 12%. Content-led link building is the most used method, at 68% in Aira's panel. Most link builders pair it with guest posts on sites with real traffic and with high quality backlinks from digital PR.

What is link building and why does it matter?

Link building is the work of acquiring quality links from other websites to your pages, done by in-house teams, link building professionals and agencies. Google uses links to judge relevancy and find pages, and the #1 result carries 3.8 times more backlinks than positions 2 to 10.

Are backlinks still relevant in 2026?

Yes. Over 96% of top-10 sites on commercial terms had more than 1,000 referring domains, and 73.2% of SEOs believe backlinks affect AI search visibility. Google's Gary Illyes said in 2024 that Google needs "very few links to rank pages," which raises the bar on link quality over volume.

Bottom line

The link building statistics agree on the direction. Top ranking pages hold 3.8 times the backlinks of the rest of page one, 94% of content earns none, and a high-quality placement costs $3,130 to $6,018 against the $508.95 SEOs say they'll pay.

The surveys and the measurements split on AI search. SEOs credit backlinks; Ahrefs' correlations credit brand mentions three times as much. Budgets planned for 2027 should pay for digital PR coverage that produces both, with guest posts kept to sites that show real traffic and link building tactics judged by quality links won per month.

Treat any link building figure without a sample and a date as noise. The $25.97 billion market estimate is the clearest case: it's 28% of someone else's forecast, and it travels across the top Google search results as if it were measured.

Where each link building figure comes from, and what none of these sources measures

Surveys: editorial.link (Link Building Statistics 2026 report, 518 SEO professionals; link building pricing page, January 2024 survey of 12 digital PR agencies), aira.net (State of Link Building 2022, 270 respondents) and buzzstream.com (State of Digital PR 2026, about 150 respondents, published 9 February 2026).

Crawl and dataset studies: backlinko.com (search engine ranking study of 11.8 million results, updated 14 April 2025; content study with BuzzSumo, 912 million posts, 2019; outreach study with Pitchbox, 12 million emails, 2019; skyscraper technique case study, May 2013).

More crawl studies: ahrefs.com (AI Overview brand correlation study, 75,000 brands, 26 May 2025; search traffic study of about 14 billion pages; reciprocal links study of 140,592 domains) and buzzstream.com (guest post costs, 257,267 sites, published 6 August 2025, updated 15 June 2026).

Google and press: developers.google.com (link best practices; spam policies), searchengineland.com (Internet Marketing Ninjas top-10 study, June 2024; December 2022 link spam update) and searchenginejournal.com (Gary Illyes, 22 April 2024).

Market sizing: dataintelo.com (Link Building Software Market Research Report) and xamsor.com (derived services estimate). Google Ads cost-per-click and search volume, and Google Trends interest, were pulled through DataForSEO on 15 and 11 October 2026.

The key figures were re-checked against editorial.link, backlinko.com, ahrefs.com, buzzstream.com and developers.google.com on 16 October 2026. No source here reports what buyers paid per link from invoices: the price figures are stated acceptable prices or marketplace list prices, and the link building services market has no measured size, only Xamsor's derived estimate.
