The dearest median contract here, Botify at $74,200, costs 266 times a $279 Screaming Frog licence.

Semrush's 2024 revenue of $376.8 million equals 11% of Report Prime's estimate for the whole 2025 market and 0.4% of Precedence Research's.

An average SEO retainer of $2,917 a month costs the same as 21 months of Semrush's $139 SEO plan.

A year of SEO software costs anywhere from $0 to $74,200. Google Search Console sits at the bottom, free of charge. Botify's median contract sits at the top, and the monthly-billed plans from Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking and Moz Pro land between $29 and $549 a month, each read off the vendor's own pricing page on 6 October 2026.

This report covers what 16 search engine optimization tools charge, in five groups: suites, content optimization editors, technical crawlers, enterprise SEO platforms and data APIs. You'll get each vendor's entry and top plan, what every tier caps, the add-ons that raise the bill, AI SEO tools for AI visibility tracking, and what SEO services, agencies and an in-house hire cost.

It's written for whoever owns the SEO budget, from a small business owner to agencies managing multiple clients.

The figures matter because published benchmarks disagree by a factor of 24, and a budget built on the wrong one is off by the same margin. Research houses put the 2025 SEO software market anywhere from $3.45 billion to $84.94 billion, and several SEO pricing pages ranking for this query quote agency retainers as SEO costs. Every number below links to the vendor, filing or research house that published it.

How SEO tools pricing works

Almost every self-serve vendor in this report uses the same SEO pricing model. Three to five monthly tiers each cap the same handful of meters, and the price steps up when you outgrow any one of them.

Ahrefs shows how the meters climb together. Lite at $129 a month allows 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords and 100,000 crawl credits, and Advanced at $449 allows 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords and 1,500,000 crawl credits, per the Ahrefs pricing page. Paying 3.5 times as much buys 10 times the projects.

  • Projects or sites: 5 on Ahrefs Lite, 5 websites on Semrush's SEO plan, 3 tracked sites on Moz Pro Standard.
  • Tracked keywords for rank tracking: 300 on Moz Pro Standard, 500 daily on Semrush's SEO plan, 2,000 daily on SE Ranking Core.
  • Seats: one on most entry tiers, with extra users at $40 to $80 a month on Ahrefs and $15 to $30 on SpyFu.
  • AI prompts: 25 on Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit, 150 on Moz Pro Standard, 200 on SE Ranking's AI Search add-on.
  • Crawl volume: 500 URLs in Screaming Frog's free version, 10,000 URLs per audit on Sitebulb Lite.

The devil's in the details of those meters, since refresh speed decides how accurate a report is on the day you read it. A tracked keyword on Semrush refreshes daily and a tracked ranking on SpyFu weekly, and Surfer refreshes AI prompts weekly on Standard and daily on Pro, an $83-a-month step on yearly billing. Two plans quoting the same allowance deliver different amounts of real search data.

Annual billing takes 15% to 20% off at most vendors. Moz and SE Ranking both discount yearly plans by 20%, Semrush and Ahrefs advertise savings of up to 17%, and Sitebulb lists 15%.

Three vendors price outside the usual tier ladder. Screaming Frog sells a yearly licence, DataForSEO charges per request from a $50 minimum payment, and Ahrefs Starter renews monthly with no yearly option.

The software pricing errors report ran twelve AI answers about Ahrefs, Sprout Social and Surfer prices against each vendor's own page, so every price here comes straight from the horse's mouth.

Every price in this table is a vendor list price, read off the vendor's own pricing page on 6 October 2026. None of the cells is a Vendr median, so no figure carries a * marker. The Vendr medians for Semrush, BrightEdge, Conductor and Botify sit in the prose sections below.

Entry prices run from $23 on NeuronWriter to $139 on Semrush. Three suites cap their first paid tier at 500 tracked keywords or fewer: 500 on Semrush's SEO plan, 300 on Moz Pro Standard and 50 on Ahrefs Starter.

Sites in competitive industries track more keywords and more competitor domains, so they climb these ladders faster. Between $50 and $150 a month, plans add daily tracking and competitor analysis, and Semrush's $139 SEO plan tracks 500 keywords daily, ten times the 50 on Ahrefs Starter at $29.

All-in-one SEO suites

Semrush lists four SEO plans on its SEO and AI search pricing page. SEO costs $139 a month, Starter $199, Pro+ $299 and Advanced $549, or $117.33 to $455.67 a month on annual billing. Pro+ lifts the allowance from 500 to 1,500 daily keywords and from 5 to 15 websites, and Advanced adds API access, 5,000 daily keywords and 40 websites.

A seven-day free trial covers the paid plans, and the free plan allows one demo project and 10 reports a day. Adobe completed its purchase of Semrush on 28 April 2026, and the Adobe Semrush acquisition report covers what the deal changed for subscribers. Plan detail sits in the Semrush pricing report and the Semrush review.

Ahrefs runs the widest ladder of any suite here, from $29 to $1,499 a month. Starter at $29 bundles Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit and Rank Tracker with 50 tracked keywords and 200 credits, which gets the ball rolling on keyword research for one site. Lite costs $129, Standard $249 and Advanced $449. Enterprise costs $1,499 a month on an annual commitment with uncapped API access and SSO, and the Ahrefs pricing report breaks down each tier.

SE Ranking's Core plan tracks more daily keywords than any other entry plan here. Core costs $129 a month, or $103.20 billed yearly, for 2,000 daily keywords, 10 projects and one manager seat, four times Semrush's entry allowance for $10 less. Growth costs $279, or $223.20 yearly, for 5,000 keywords, 30 projects and three seats, and a 14-day free trial covers both.

Moz Pro starts at $49 a month for a single website and runs Standard at $99, Medium at $179 and Large at $299, or $79, $143 and $239 billed yearly. Seats rise from one to three, tracked keywords from 300 to 3,000, and branded reports start on Medium. Every plan includes AI Overviews data by keyword.

SpyFu prices its top tier lowest of the five suites. Basic costs $39 a month, or $33 billed yearly, for 5,000 weekly tracked rankings and 10,000-row exports, and Professional costs $79, or $58 yearly, for 15,000 weekly rankings and unlimited rows. Extra seats cost $15 and $30 a month, and the SpyFu review covers the rest of the plan.

Content optimization tools

Positive Surfer bills its plans yearly at $49 a month for Discovery, $99 for Standard, $182 for Pro and $299 for Peace of Mind. Standard covers 360 documents for content creation, team collaboration and 25 AI prompts refreshed weekly. Pro adds daily prompt tracking, one-click internal linking and 5 Brand Spaces, Surfer's multi-brand management feature, and API access arrives on Peace of Mind with a dedicated success manager.

The Positive Surfer review scores the editor itself, and Positive Surfer vs Semrush puts the two side by side for content creation and content strategy work.

Clearscope charges $129 a month for Essentials and $399 for Business, with unlimited users on both and 20 drafts a month included. Extra drafts cost $50 each on Essentials and $20 on Business, so a team writing 40 drafts a month pays $1,129 on Essentials and $799 on Business. At that volume it pays to bite the bullet on the bigger plan, and the Clearscope review covers the scoring.

NeuronWriter is the cheapest AI SEO content editor here. Bronze costs $23 a month for 25 content analyses and Diamond $117 for 150, or $19 and $97 billed yearly, which works out at $0.92 and $0.78 per analysis on monthly billing. The NeuronWriter review covers the editor in detail, and the content intelligence tools ranking lists more AI SEO content scorers.

Technical SEO crawlers

Screaming Frog sells its SEO Spider for $279 a year per licence, falling to $235 each for 20 or more licences. That's $23.25 a month, and the free version crawls 500 URLs.

Sitebulb Lite crawls 10,000 URLs per audit, Pro 500,000 with an option to reach 2 million, and Sitebulb Cloud starts at £95 a month for unlimited crawling.

A crawl is the first step of any technical SEO audit. One pass lists broken links, redirect chains, missing tags and site speed problems, the technical improvements a developer then schedules, and running it monthly nips new problems in the bud before they reach Google rankings.

Site size sets the crawl bill. A 300-page site fits inside Screaming Frog's free 500 URLs, a 50,000-page site needs Sitebulb Pro or Ahrefs crawl credits, and seoClarity prices by domain count, so larger websites cost more to audit for technical SEO than smaller ones.

Enterprise SEO platforms

seoClarity is the one enterprise SEO platform here that publishes starting prices. Research & Content starts at $2,500 a month, Technical SEO at $3,200 and Enterprise at $4,500, and its Rankings plan requires at least 2,000 keyword queries. Its pricing model ties every package to the number of domains and keywords tracked.

BrightEdge, Conductor and Botify publish no rate card, so Vendr's purchase data is the public benchmark. BrightEdge's median contract is $50,000 a year across 46 purchases, ranging from $42,492 to $68,936. Conductor's median is $49,020, from $41,364 to $93,100, and Botify's is $74,200, from $48,000 to $150,000. Those medians work out at $4,085 to $6,183 a month for enterprise companies, before staff.

Horizontal bar chart of what one year of SEO software costs: Screaming Frog licence $279, Semrush SEO plan on yearly billing $1,408, Semrush Advanced on yearly billing $5,468, Semrush Vendr median $12,480, Conductor Vendr median $49,020, BrightEdge Vendr median $50,000, seoClarity Enterprise from $54,000, Botify Vendr median $74,200
The dearest median contract costs 266 times the cheapest paid licence.

A year of Semrush's SEO plan on annual billing costs $1,408 and a year of Advanced costs $5,468. The enterprise platforms start near $49,020, about nine times the dearest suite plan, and Botify's median would cost an arm and a leg for any team outside the enterprise bracket.

SEO data APIs

DataForSEO uses a per-request pricing model and sells real search data by the request. Google organic results cost $0.0006 per page of 10 results in the standard queue and $0.002 in live mode, from a $50 minimum payment with no subscription. Checking 1,000 keywords once a day for 30 days at the standard rate comes to $18.

That $18 buys raw data for developers who know the ropes. The DataForSEO pricing report lists every endpoint, the DataForSEO review covers data quality, and the rank tracking price comparison sets the API against dedicated trackers.

AI SEO tools and AI visibility tracking prices

AI visibility tracking is the newest meter on an SEO bill, priced next to traditional SEO tracking. AI SEO tools send a fixed list of prompts to AI models such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode on a schedule and record which brand mentions, citations and AI mentions come back in the AI answers.

Five vendors in this report have jumped on the bandwagon with AI SEO tools, and all of them price AI visibility tracking per tracked prompt.

AI SEO toolPrice a monthPromptsEngines and refresh
Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit$99 standalone25Extra 50 prompts $60, no free trial
Semrush Starter (SEO and AI search)$19950 dailyIncludes 500 daily keywords
Ahrefs Brand Radar AIFrom $199Prompt packs from 2,500 checksSold as a separate product
Moz Pro Standard$99150 weeklyChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Mode
SE Ranking AI Search add-on$89, or $71.20 yearly200Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity
Positive Surfer AI Search Analytics$82, billed yearly50 dailyChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews

All six prices are vendor list prices from each vendor's own pricing or help pages, checked 6 October 2026. No cell in this table is a Vendr median.

Per prompt, AI SEO tools differ almost ninefold. SE Ranking's add-on, which tracks AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT and Perplexity, works out at $0.45 a prompt a month and Semrush's standalone AI toolkit at $3.96, and Moz bundles 150 prompts into its $99 Standard plan alongside traditional SEO tracking, $0.66 a prompt before counting any keyword data.

Ahrefs sells Brand Radar AI from $199 a month as a separate product. Ahrefs also sells custom prompt packs from $50 a month for 2,500 checks to $250 for 25,000, with overage at $0.010 to $0.020 a check, so a Brand Radar budget scales with how many AI engines and markets a team watches.

Semrush folds AI search tracking into plans priced against traditional SEO. Its Starter plan at $199 tracks 50 prompts a day alongside 500 keywords, and the AI toolkit help page prices each extra domain or location at $99 a month.

AI SEO tools count prompts differently. Moz checks each prompt across four AI models weekly, Surfer refreshes 50 prompts daily on its AI Search Analytics plan, and Semrush's toolkit tracks 25, so a prompt allowance means little until you know the AI platforms and refresh schedule behind it. A prompt checked in four AI engines returns four answers, where a keyword checked in one search engine returns one ranking.

AI visibility sits next to classic search visibility on most of these AI platforms. The SEO visibility score report explains the rankings-based score, and the AI traffic report measures how much traffic AI answers send to websites, the number to weigh before paying for online visibility in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

Free SEO tools and what they cover

Google Search Console is a free service from Google and the only tool in this report that reports Google's own clicks, impressions and average position for a verified site. Google's own guidance adds that it costs nothing to appear in organic search results.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is free for verified sites, with 5,000 site audit crawl credits per project a month. Semrush's free plan allows 10 reports a day, and Screaming Frog's free crawler stops at 500 URLs.

The free tiers ration volume, and beggars can't be choosers on those caps. Search Console covers organic traffic from Google for your own site, Google Analytics covers what visitors do after the click, and competitor keyword data at volume starts on the paid tiers.

Hidden costs: seats, usage limits and API access

Seat charges are par for the course in SEO suites. Ahrefs includes one user per plan and charges $40, $60 or $80 a month for each extra user on Lite, Standard and Advanced, so a five-person team on Standard pays $249 plus $240, or $489 a month.

SpyFu charges $15 and $30 per extra seat, Moz includes one to three users, and SE Ranking includes one or three manager seats. Clearscope sits at the other end with unlimited users on both published plans.

Every allowance has a paid add-on above it. Ahrefs sells Project Boost Pro at $20 a month per project and Project Boost Max at $200, Moz charges $50 per extra 100 AI prompts and $20 per extra AI dashboard, and Moz's own plan table notes that overages aren't included.

API access sits on the top tier at three of the four SEO platforms here that list an API price. Semrush includes it on Advanced at $549 a month, Positive Surfer on Peace of Mind at $299 billed yearly, and Ahrefs reserves full API access for Enterprise at $1,499. SE Ranking sells an API add-on for $45 a month on annual billing, or a standalone API from $179.

Reporting is a separate line too. Ahrefs charges $99 a month for Report Builder and from $99 for Content Kit, and SE Ranking's Agency Pack costs $69 a month on annual billing for 30 client seats and white-label reports.

Support and onboarding climb with the tier too. Moz gives every plan 24-hour online support, onboarding tips and its Help Hub of guides, Clearscope adds a dedicated account manager on Business at $399, and Surfer adds personalized onboarding and a dedicated success manager on Peace of Mind.

Read between the lines of Vendr's Semrush data and the add-ons show up. The median buyer across 61 purchases pays $12,480 a year, with a range of $4,860 to $56,695. A year of Advanced on annual billing lists at $5,468, so the median contract sits 2.3 times above the top self-serve plan and carries extra users, add-ons or an Enterprise agreement.

SEO software market size by research house

Five research house estimates checked for this report put the SEO software market's base year between $3.45 billion and $84.94 billion, depending on how much digital marketing software each one counts.

Why the published estimates diverge

The estimates diverge on scope. Grand View Research, Precedence Research and KBV Research each split SEO software by type into social media marketing, email marketing, pay-per-click, display, video and content marketing, plus SEO itself.

Those segments describe digital marketing software. Social media marketing takes the lion's share in Grand View's count, more than 28% of 2023, Precedence gives it 29% of 2025, and KBV gives email marketing 21% of 2023, so at least a fifth of each broad estimate is social media or email software.

Report Prime counts SEO software alone, split into desktop and mobile products, and names BrightEdge, Conductor, SpyFu and Moz among the vendors it tracks. Its $3.45 billion for 2025 has the narrowest scope in the table.

Vendor results give a floor to test the estimates against. Semrush reported full-year 2024 revenue of $376.8 million and annual recurring revenue of $411.6 million from about 117,000 paying customers, roughly $3,500 a customer a year.

Semrush alone equals 11% of Report Prime's 2025 market. Against Precedence's $84.94 billion it's 0.4%, and the broad figure needs about 225 businesses Semrush's size to add up.

Bar chart of SEO software market estimates: Report Prime $3.45 billion for 2025, KBV Research $13.4 billion for 2023, Grand View Research $68.3 billion for 2023, Precedence Research $84.94 billion for 2025, with Semrush 2024 revenue of $376.8 million for scale and a 24.6 times gap between the 2025 figures
The two 2025 estimates sit 24.6 times apart because the larger one counts social, email and PPC software.

The broad-scope houses agree with each other. Grand View puts 2026 at $91.1 billion and Precedence at $96.42 billion, 6% apart, so the 24.6-fold gap between the 2025 figures comes from what each house counts.

Quoting $84.94 billion as the size of the SEO tool market misses the mark by that same factor. Report Prime's $3.45 billion market, on a path of sustainable growth at 13.18% a year to $8.21 billion by 2032, describes the suites, editors and crawlers priced above, and the SEO industry's spend on SEO services sits outside both counts.

SEO tools against SEO services, agencies and in-house staff

Several pages ranking for SEO tools pricing quote SEO services fees, which pay for labor on top of software. The best public benchmark for those fees is Ahrefs' survey of 439 SEO providers, last updated 15 August 2024. It found 78.2% charge monthly retainers, 48.9% charge per project and 34.8% charge by the hour.

What an SEO provider charges

The average monthly retainer for SEO services in the survey was $2,917, with SEO agencies averaging $3,209 and freelancers $1,348.63. The most common bracket was $501 to $1,000 a month, picked by 20.4% of respondents, and 31.2% charged $2,001 or more.

Location moves SEO pricing. 79.1% of US and Canadian providers charged $1,001 or more a month, the top bracket among them reached $25,001 to $50,000, and 76% of India-based providers charged $1,000 or less.

Hourly work averaged $111, with $75 to $100 the most common rate at 24% of providers and consultants averaging $171.18. One-off projects most often cost $2,501 to $5,000, and agency projects averaged $9,507.84.

Twelve months at the $2,917 average retainer comes to $35,004, seven times the top of the most common project bracket. A retainer pays for ongoing optimization, monthly reporting and continuous optimization of content, so a one-time SEO audit bought as a project costs a fraction of a year.

Most of a retainer buys SEO expertise and hours. An SEO provider running an SEO campaign pays for its own tools, and a $139 Semrush seat is 4.8% of a $2,917 retainer, so software makes up under 5% of the SEO costs a typical retainer covers. In highly competitive industries an SEO campaign needs more content creation, internal linking, link building and technical optimization to move a page, so the hours and the bill rise with it.

Local SEO

Local SEO services averaged $1,557 a month in the Ahrefs survey, $1,819 at agencies and $1,150 from freelancers. Geographic coverage is a priced meter on the software side. SE Ranking includes 3 locations in its local marketing add-on and charges from $18.40 a month for each extra one.

A local SEO campaign for one shop tracks one location, so the software bill is a drop in the bucket next to the retainer.

In-house SEO staff

Hiring in-house carries the highest SEO costs of the three routes. O*NET lists search marketing strategists, the in-house SEO professionals on a payroll, at a 2025 median wage of $78,760 a year, or $37.87 an hour, from Bureau of Labor Statistics data, before benefits.

Add a Semrush Pro+ seat at $299 a month and one in-house hire runs $82,348 a year, 2.4 times the $35,004 average retainer. That buys a person on your SEO strategy and every SEO campaign full time, with ongoing optimization, ongoing maintenance and ongoing support of the site inside the salary.

How to set an SEO budget for tools

Set the SEO budget, AI SEO add-ons included, from the meters you'll hit, then match tools to them, so you avoid paying for features nobody on the team opens.

Small business

A small business with one site can start at $0 with Search Console and Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. Add Ahrefs Starter at $29 or NeuronWriter Bronze at $23 when keyword research or content optimization becomes a weekly task, a stack that costs $52 a month.

Semrush's SEO plan at $139 or SE Ranking Core at $129 fits once daily tracking passes Ahrefs Starter's 50 keywords. Cross that bridge when you come to it, since a small business SEO strategy built on free data runs fine until competitor research becomes a weekly job.

Agencies managing multiple clients

Agencies managing multiple clients pay for projects and seats. SE Ranking Growth at $279 plus the $69 Agency Pack comes to $348 a month for 30 projects, 30 client seats and 5,000 daily keywords. Semrush Advanced at $549 covers 40 websites and 5,000 daily keywords, with API access for a reporting layer across multiple clients.

The competitive intelligence SEO tools ranking ranks 10 platforms for agency content strategy and keyword research.

Enterprise SEO teams

Enterprise SEO teams budget from $30,000 a year at seoClarity's Research & Content starting price to the $74,200 Botify median.

The SEO platform reports problems, and fixing them takes writers, developers and an SEO lead who owns the SEO strategy. In a highly competitive market those technical improvements and content strategy changes need their own budget line next to the SEO platform licence.

Frequently asked questions

How much do SEO tools cost?

SEO tools cost $0 to $549 a month on monthly-billed self-serve plans, from free Search Console to Semrush Advanced. Enterprise platforms run from $30,000 a year at seoClarity's starting price to a $74,200 Botify median. AI SEO tools for prompt tracking add $71.20 to $199 a month, from SE Ranking's add-on on annual billing to Ahrefs Brand Radar AI.

What is the most affordable SEO tool?

Search Console is free. The cheapest paid plans in this report are NeuronWriter Bronze at $23 a month, or $19 billed yearly, Ahrefs Starter at $29 and SpyFu Basic at $39, or $33 billed yearly.

Are there free SEO tools?

Yes. Search Console, Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, Semrush's free plan and Screaming Frog's 500-URL crawler are free tools. Each caps volume, from 10 reports a day on Semrush to 500 URLs on Screaming Frog.

How much does SEO cost per month?

SEO services averaged $2,917 a month across 439 providers in Ahrefs' SEO pricing survey, with freelancers at $1,348.63 and SEO agencies at $3,209. Doing SEO yourself costs the tools alone, $23 to $549 a month on the self-serve plans priced here.

Is SEO worth paying for in 2026?

Google says it costs nothing to appear in its search engine's organic results, so the spend goes on tools and labor. The SEO ROI calculator tests that spend against your own traffic and conversion figures before you commit SEO efforts to a plan.

Can I do SEO on my own?

Yes, with free tools and one paid plan. Search Console covers your own site's search data, a $279 Screaming Frog licence handles on-page SEO and technical checks, and a $29 to $139 suite plan covers keyword research and competitor analysis. An agency bills an average $111 an hour for the expertise you'd supply yourself.

Bottom line

SEO tools pricing splits into four bands: free first-party data from Google, $23 to $549 a month for self-serve suites and editors, pay-per-request APIs, and enterprise contracts from $30,000 to $74,200 a year. Projects, keywords, seats and AI prompts decide where a team lands inside each band.

AI SEO tools are the newest line on the bill, and per-prompt prices already differ almost ninefold. Check the refresh schedule and engine list behind each prompt count before comparing AI SEO tools on price.

Treat market-size headlines with care. The SEO software market is $3.45 billion on Report Prime's narrow count and $84.94 billion on Precedence Research's broad one, which counts digital marketing tools, and the narrow figure is the one that describes the tools on this page.

Tracked-contract figures are the header stat blocks on vendr.com/marketplace for Semrush, BrightEdge, Conductor and Botify.

The market-size, ownership and labor sections add reportprime.com, kbvresearch.com, technavio.com, grandviewresearch.com, precedenceresearch.com, news.adobe.com and onetonline.org, whose 2025 median wage comes from Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

Dated research documents: Report Prime's SEO Software Market report (April 2026), KBV Research's Global SEO Software Market report (August 2024), Technavio's SEO Software Market Analysis, Size, and Forecast 2025-2029 (May 2025), Grand View Research's report covering 2024 to 2030, and Precedence Research's SEO Software Market report (11 September 2026).

Other dated sources: the Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers (last updated 15 August 2024), Adobe's announcement that it completed the Semrush acquisition (28 April 2026) and Semrush's full-year 2024 financial results release.

BrightEdge, Conductor and Botify publish no rate card on their own sites, so every figure for them here is a Vendr median from anonymized purchase data. seoClarity publishes starting prices only.
