Video game industry statistics for 2026: $213.9 billion in revenue, 3,200 Xbox job cuts and a $542 console

Newzoo puts global games revenue at $213.9 billion for 2026, up 6.1%, from 3.70 billion people who play video games. The same summer, Microsoft cut about 3,200 gaming jobs, and US consumers paid 16% more per console in July, $542 on average, while buying 39% fewer consoles.

These video game industry statistics use 2026 data only. The money keeps growing. The jobs and the cheap options don't.

Video game industry overview: $213.9 billion in 2026, and 3,200 Xbox jobs gone

This industry overview rests on two trackers. The Newzoo Global Games Market Report 2026 counts $213.9 billion of consumer spend on video games worldwide. Circana's US data projected $62.8 billion, above the 2021 record of $61.7 billion; July came in 10% lower.

The gains come from price: a $542 console system costs an arm and a leg for plenty of US consumers. Microsoft cut 3,200 jobs as its gaming CEO said the studios lose 64 cents on every dollar invested, and hardware and new-release prices keep going up.

"the industry is getting worse at giving them affordable things to play."

Mat Piscatella, Circana, to GamesBeat, July 2026

Global video game market size: $213.9 billion, and mobile takes 57% of it

Mobile games bring in $121.1 billion of the 2026 total, up 6.8%, the lion's share of the global video game market at 57%. Console games and PC games split the rest: consoles $46.9 billion (+5.1%, after a near-stall in 2025) and PC $45.9 billion (+5.3%).

Bar chart of Newzoo's 2026 global games revenue by platform: mobile $121.1 billion (57%), console $46.9 billion (about 22%, our calculation) and PC $45.9 billion (about 21%, our calculation), out of $213.9 billion

PC is the platform that converts the most players into payers, 55%. Newzoo has the video game market projected at $242.8 billion by 2029, about 4.3% a year (our calculation), and the US and China combined account for 52% of global spend.

Who plays video games: 3.70 billion players, 1.65 billion of them paying

About 3.70 billion people play video games in 2026, Newzoo reports, and 3.10 billion play mobile games. Fewer than half pay anything.

New players come mostly from the Middle East and Africa, up 7.9% to 640 million, compared with 475 million in Europe and 251 million in North America. Most new players join where spending power per player is lowest.

In the US, the country's trade body, the Entertainment Software Association, counts 212.3 million Americans who play video games, average age 37, 53% male and 46% female. The entertainment software trade body says the US video game industry supports more than 250,000 jobs & $95.8 billion in economic impact.

"If you fell in love with video games at 17 and you're 40, guess what? You still do play video games."

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two CEO, to The Game Business, 17 March 2026

Zelnick sees gaming culture ageing with its players, and my own history fits his point. I started as a kid on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, one of the few perfect games: 10/10 music, gameplay loop, dopamine hits and replayability. Diablo 2, World of Warcraft and, later, League of Legends carry the same nostalgia, and I still play the first and watch the last. The ESA's average player age of 37 points the same way.

Zelnick named analyst Matthew Ball as a dissenter.

Mobile games earn $121.1 billion by one count and fell 2% by another

Two trackers, two directions. Newzoo's global report has mobile games up 6.8%. Sensor Tower's H1 2026 index has app-store in-app purchases down 2% to $39.8 billion, downloads down 12% and playtime flat at 221 billion hours, so users play longer in fewer new games.

Read between the lines and both can be right: Newzoo counts all consumer spend, the store data app-store purchases only. Growth sits off the stores, in web shops and China's mini games, which engage 80% of players there and take about 20% of mobile spend, per Niko Partners. Global ad spend on video games rose 8% to $7 billion.

"For planning purposes, the half is less a breakout story than a baseline: stable demand, selective growth, and a more competitive fight for attention heading into H2."

Sam Aune, lead gaming insights analyst, Sensor Tower, July 2026

Epic's CEO explained why money leaves the stores:

"Today, in the USA, developers are free to steer users of iOS and Android apps to competing purchase methods. Apple and Google collect 0% on those transactions. On computers and smartphones, Valve is the only major store still holding onto the payments tie and 30% junk fee."

Asia-Pacific earns $100.7 billion, 47% of global games revenue

Asia-Pacific generates $100.7 billion in 2026 and accounts for 47% of the global video game market, up 6%, to lead every other region. It also has the most players: Newzoo's 2026 key numbers name Asia-Pacific the largest player region, while the Middle East and Africa add players fastest.

Europe has almost twice North America's players and two-thirds of its market. Growth runs fastest in Latin America and the Middle East, where spend per player is lowest.

China is the largest country market in Asia: $51.8 billion in 2025 and $53.9 billion for 2026, per Niko Partners. Tencent's Q2 2026 results show domestic games at RMB 47.3 billion (+17%) and international games at RMB 18.6 billion.

The US spent $60.7 billion in 2025, so that nation's consumers outspent China by about $9 billion (our calculation, different methods). South Korea sits inside Newzoo's Asia-Pacific figure, with no separate South Korea line in this edition.

Take-Two keeps most of its eggs in one basket: about 65% of sales come from the US. Zelnick told The Game Business he expects the US share to fall to 20 to 25% within 10 years as international sales grow.

Path of Exile 2 peaked at 420,409 Steam players in 2026, Diablo IV at 63,808

Path of Exile 2 drew 420,409 concurrent Steam players in May 2026, and Diablo IV peaked at 63,808 the same month after its Lord of Hatred expansion. That's about 6.6 times the audience on Steam (our calculation).

Blizzard plans Diablo 5 for 2029, its game director told MonsterVine, and still adds support for Diablo II: Resurrected, which averages 3,156 Steam players:

"If you're wearing the sign in the middle of Times Square that says 'the end is nigh,' the end is not nigh. ... We are even adding to Diablo 2 with the Warlock."

Brent Gibson, Blizzard, to MonsterVine, 17 September 2026

Diablo II: Resurrected's 3,156 average is the only Diablo 2 number on Steam, and it misses where I play. My ARPG time goes to Project Diablo 2, a community mod that runs on the original Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction, so none of my 300 to 400 hours since January, eight or nine months of play, shows up in SteamCharts. The Steam-only caveat under the table below cuts both ways.

Project Diablo 2 keeps the classic itemization and character progression of the original, then freshens up the balance and adds what Diablo IV and Path of Exile 2 compete on: more viable builds, endgame activities, more variety, better trading and an active Discord and Reddit community. The people running it do it for the love of the game, the motive that built the original 20 to 25 years ago.

I still haven't had enough. Its next season looks hype, with a long list of quality-of-life changes, and with this one ending I've switched to hardcore, where a dead character is gone for good. I'm loving it, and I can't see myself going back to regular mode.

Grinding Gear Games, for its part, admits Path of Exile 2 took longer than it planned:

"What I would say is that in the early days of early access - well, kind of before we released into early access - we had a lot of arrogance about how long we thought it would take."

Jonathan Rogers, Grinding Gear Games, to PCGamesN at Gamescom 2026

Keep an eye on 11 December, when Path of Exile 2 goes free-to-play for the first time and its popularity against competitors gets a clean read.

US physical game sales fell to $85 million in July, the lowest July since 1995

US physical software sold $85 million in July 2026, the lowest July since tracking began in 1995. PlayStation data shows 82% of PS4 and PS5 full-game software is downloaded, and it has set the end of discs in stone: new PlayStation games stop shipping on disc from January 2028, a change retail distributors can't dodge.

Subscriptions were the only category where US consumers spent more in July, up 6%. Microsoft cut Game Pass Ultimate from $29.99 to $22.99 a month in April.

GTA VI costs $79.99 standard. If prices rise, 38% of US consumers would buy fewer full-price games and 34% would wait for sales, Circana found.

My own main game sits at the other end of that squeeze. Project Diablo 2 costs nothing beyond the Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction copies it runs on, and it runs well on newer machines with upscaled graphics. That's the kind of affordable play Piscatella says the industry is getting worse at providing.

"I think that Rockstar got it right in terms of the pricing of this standard edition and the pricing of the deluxe edition"

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two, to Variety, 7 August 2026

Steam shows the squeeze from the store side: premium sales of $5.4 billion in H1, down 5%, as releases rose 19% and demand spread thinner. Ownership is concentrating too:

"After spending $69 billion on Activision Blizzard, Xbox is now handing its most prized first-party IP to the acquired publisher, with the next flagship Halo going to a dedicated team at the studio behind Call of Duty."

Xbox cut 3,200 jobs in 2026 while losing 64 cents on every studio dollar

"We will return to growth in 2027. History is full of companies that mistake longevity for inevitability. We will not be one of them."

Asha Sharma, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, memo quoted by GeekWire, 6 July 2026

The wider video game industry shows the same pattern. The GDC 2026 State of the Game Industry survey found 28% of developers laid off in the past two years, 33% in the US. Union support runs at 82% of US respondents, and 74% of students still in education worry about job prospects.

US console prices rose 16% to $542 while unit sales fell 39%

US consoles averaged $542 in July, up 16%, and consoles sold fell 39%, per Circana hardware data. Hardware dollars fell 29% to $282 million. PS5 units fell 6%, Xbox Series 18% and Nintendo Switch 2 51%. June was worse, with units down 62%, Piscatella said.

Chart of US console sales in July 2026 from Circana: average price up 16% to $542 while hardware units fell 39%, with PS5 units down 6%, Xbox Series down 18% and Switch 2 down 51%
In July 2026, US console prices rose 16% and unit sales fell 39%.

The pressure starts upstream. Microsoft raised console prices by $100 and $150 from 1 August and said memory costs are up more than 2.5 times, with "another doubling by fall 2027" expected.

That leaves the company between a rock and a hard place on consoles. Its gaming CEO ties the cuts to the component-cost crisis, and Fortune reported hardware revenue down 33% and gaming revenue down 7%, with consoles still 80% of the business.

The Nintendo Switch 2 system reached 23.68 million units by 30 June, though April to June sales fell 34.4%, and a price rise took effect on 1 September.

"Neither of these companies seems particularly interested in addressing the less-affluent part of the market right now."

52% of game developers say generative AI hurts the industry, up from 18% in 2024

52% of developers told GDC's 2026 survey that generative AI harms the game industry, up from 18% in 2024. Only 7% see it as positive. Developers aren't on the fence any more.

Sulka Haro, Mainframe Industries, via PC Gamer, July 2026

Take-Two's CEO made both cases on one call:

"right now we have hundreds of pilots and implementations across our company, including within our studios. And we're already seeing instances where generative AI tools are driving costs and time efficiencies."

"Specifically with regards to GTA 6, Generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building. Their worlds are handcrafted."

Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two, 3 February 2026

Other technology trends from GDC: Unreal leads Unity as primary engine, 42% to 30%. Looking ahead, future growth trends point up: Newzoo's global report projects $242.8 billion for 2029 and Niko expects China to reach $59.8 billion by 2030.

Cloud gaming is still a small slice. Grand View Research puts the cloud gaming market at $4.9 billion in 2026 and projects $62.9 billion by 2033, in a report published in August 2026.

Frequently asked questions

How big is the video game industry?

$213.9 billion in 2026, up 6.1%, per Newzoo's global report, from 3.70 billion players.

Is the gaming industry growing or declining?

The global video game market is growing by 6.1%, but US consumers spent 10% less in July and app-store mobile spend fell 2% in H1.

Are video game sales declining?

In US physical retail, yes: $85 million in July 2026, the lowest July since 1995. Circana still forecasts +3% for the year, with GTA VI ahead.

Is Xbox struggling financially?

Its hardware revenue fell 33%, and its studios lose 64 cents per dollar invested. Microsoft cut 3,200 jobs.

What is the #1 selling game in 2026?

EA SPORTS FC 26 was the best-selling PC and console game of H1 2026, per Sensor Tower data.

What are some statistics about video games?

1.65 billion paying players spend $129.6 each (Newzoo), and 212.3 million Americans play video games (ESA data).

Bottom line

Newzoo's $213.9 billion total is up 6.1%, Microsoft cut 3,200 jobs and the average US console cost $542 in July. Consumers pay more for less, and companies protect margin with headcount.

The US forecast goes down to the wire. GTA VI launches on 19 November at $79.99 and Path of Exile 2 goes free-to-play on 11 December; those two dates decide if Circana's +3% holds. After that, the next checkable claim about the future is Asha Sharma's return to growth in 2027.
