Pairs well with GfK
GfK is the Nuremberg market research firm that counts what people buy in technology and durables for brands and retailers across the industry: TVs, smartphones, laptops, washing machines. Since July 2023 it has belonged to NIQ, and its main product, the gfknewron platform, now sits in NIQ's catalog next to the grocery measurement NielsenIQ built.
This review covers what a GfK contract buys, where the numbers come from, what users and former employees say on Reddit, Hacker News and Glassdoor, and how it compares with Circana, YouGov Shopper and Ipsos. By the end you'll know what gfknewron includes, which GfK prices are public and which rival fits which buying situation. Cost gets a short section here and a full teardown in our GfK pricing report.
It's written for brand, channel and category managers at consumer electronics & appliance companies, and for the analysts who'd sit in the tool every Monday.
The GfK audience measurement site says its content will move to NIQ Media before the end of 2026. GfK's corporate communications already run from nielseniq.com, where old gfk.com press links redirect. That matters for anyone renewing in 2026, because the brand on the contract is changing while the panel keeps running.
↑ FACT SHEETWhat GfK is, and who owns it now
GfK stands for Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung, the consumer research society that Wilhelm Vershofen, Erich Schäfer and Ludwig Erhard founded in Nuremberg in 1934, according to NIQ's own 90-year timeline. The same page dates the Frankfurt listing to 1999 and the "Growth from Knowledge" brand claim to 2000.
Growth came by acquisition, and the company acquired its way into the world top tier of market research services. In April 2005 it acquired NOP World from United Business Media for £383 million in cash, adding custom research and healthcare expertise, a deal MrWeb reported would make it global No. 3 in custom research. In February 2016 it acquired Netquest, a panel firm covering 21 countries, plus its subsidiary Wakoopa and its cross-device passive measurement software.
At its peak the firm ranked fourth among market research organizations worldwide, with $1,718.0 million of research revenue in 2010, behind Nielsen, Kantar and IMS Health in the Honomichl Top 50. Profit was a different story. The company reported consolidated net income of €19.4 million on €1,453 million of sales for 2014, a margin of about 1.3%, and €40.7 million on €1,543 million for 2015, per its March 2016 results.
Then the owners changed, fast. KKR launched a tender for every listed share of GfK SE at €43.50 in 2017, a transaction worth about €2 billion, and took an equity stake of roughly 40% that left KKR and the founding association, GfK Verein, holding more than 95% of GfK SE between them, per Jones Day, counsel on the deal.
Peter Feld ran the company from March 2017 until 14 March 2022, when the supervisory board of GfK SE announced his exit after a five-year turnaround, per the release now archived on nielseniq.com.
The turnaround shrank the company. Ipsos completed its purchase of four GfK divisions, Customer Experience, Experience Innovation, Health and Public Affairs, for €105 million in October 2018.
NIQ and GfK announced their combination on 1 July 2022, with Advent as majority owner and KKR staying in as a minority holder, according to KKR's release. The deal closed in July 2023. The European Commission's price for approval was the consumer panel business, which YouGov bought for €315 million, covering 18 European countries and more than 100,000 households.
The parent is now public. NIQ sold 50 million shares at $21 in its July 2025 IPO, and its prospectus calls GfK "the global leader in tech and durables (“T&D”) measurement" and credits the combination with $462.2 million of 2024 revenue. An Advent affiliate, the holding company for that stake, keeps a majority of the voting power. NIQ reported $4,198.4 million of revenue for 2025.
↑ FACT SHEETWhat a GfK contract covers
gfknewron is the login, and it sits beside NIQ's own Discover platform for grocery. NIQ's product page splits it into Market for sales tracking, Consumer for buyer research and Predict for forecasts and scenarios, and lists 50+ countries, 100,000+ retail data partnerships and 180 million+ products tracked.
Market is pitched as a way to identify growth opportunities and monitor performance against competitors, and Predict as a way to plan the future with scenarios. The same page carries a client line about weekly figures and a Forrester study, featured by the vendor, claiming 345% ROI.
Around that core sit smaller paid products:
- Consumer Life, a lifestyle study run every year since 1997 among more than 30,000 consumers in 25+ countries, available as reports or 24/7 online access. NIQ says it helps buyers understand how values evolve, anticipate trends and craft messages for a target group. It's built for the latest trends and the burning questions a marketing strategy meeting asks about future consumer choices. NIQ also offers consulting services, with consultants answering custom questions.
- Shopper Voice, launched on 5 September 2025, which turns about 160,000 shopper comments into 100-word insights summaries across 15 markets and draws its insights from a big data base of over 1 billion sales transactions.
- The Online Sensor report, which pairs e-commerce deal aggregators with consumer panel inputs and advanced analytics for brand and marketing leaders who want insights on online channels. It promises to show what is selling online, where, and at what price point by geography and demographic, so brands can adapt their strategies and stay ahead of trends in online buying.
- GfK Boutique, the investor version, which claims 75 hedge fund clients, figures that capture online and offline sales, and a 7-day lag. It belongs on any list of alternative data providers.

Where the numbers come from
Point-of-sale feeds from online and offline retail partner companies are the base layer, which is why GfK can offer weekly unit and price figures for one laptop model in one region. Questionnaires sent to recent buyers add the why. Panels add the who, and the 2016 Wakoopa purchase gave the firm software that lets a panel monitor internet usage on mobile phones and computers. Sampling and weighting are a science of their own, covered in our market research methods guide.
Panel recruitment worked by post in the past. A 2012 thread on r/nyc opens with an invitation that arrived by post with two one-dollar bills inside, and a panelist in the replies wrote: "They'll pay you anywhere from $10-$75 to take one of their (lengthy) surveys." A member of the same panel posted on r/beermoney in June 2012 that "it's about $1 per survey but occasionally you'll get one that is worth a bonus."
↑ FACT SHEETGfK pricing in brief
gfknewron is priced by quote. NIQ's prospectus says its "Intelligence solutions are typically priced based on data volume over a given period or based on the number of seat licenses" and run on contracts "typically two to five years in duration."
That puts it in the same procurement lane as most of the vendors in our market research cost report and our market intelligence platform pricing teardown. Customers who need the number should plan for a sales call, and teams that want to create their own cuts need a seat licence. NIQ lists Discover, gfknewron and Activate as its software applications.
Two prices are public. The GfK GeoMarketing webshop lists RegioGraph Analysis at €2,080 a year, purchasing power figures for one country included. And a 2018 GfK Czech sheet priced the 35-country FutureBuy study at CZK 89,900 without VAT, for two reports and dashboard access for up to 5 colleagues for one year.
One buyer's view of the cost survives from 2012. A buyer posting in the same r/nyc thread said GfK had done research for them, then added:
"They have a very cool office above Chelsea market. but for the amount of money they charge us I'd think they could've put a couple of 20's in there."

What users praise
Practitioners treat GfK as reference data, the number other companies check their own figures against. A former strategist at an agency handling global retail brands described the planning stack on Hacker News in September 2018:
"Most of their insights came from internal dashboards fueled by Nielsen, GFK, Kantar (amazing sources by the way), and many private studies."

Scale and method are the other draw. A top commenter on r/UXResearch in January 2024 steered a researcher away from cheap recruitment platforms:
"Large market research companies like Ipsos, Nielsen, Gfk, Kantar,... They have much larger samples, often decades more (international) experience, and better quality control (eg. ISO standard), than these platforms."
Necessary-Lack-4600, r/UXResearch, January 2024
Competitive tracking is the job the firm gets bought for, and its value shows up when brands identify share shifts by country. A former employee of a hardware company wrote on r/ValueInvesting in August 2024: "I worked in tech, and we could buy some of this data by geo because we wanted to track our competitors. (For example, GFK in Europe.)" A developer on Hacker News in January 2013 named GfK among the "respectable information services" for estimated retail prices.
What users and former staff complain about
Access is the first wall. A job seeker asking on r/AskMarketing in February 2017 how to learn Nielsen, comScore or GfK found that training exists, but "one cannot access them unless they are a paying customer."
Scope is the second. A buyer who said "I’ve used them" wrote on r/Marketresearch in July 2024 that GfK's people "look young, overworked and underpaid" and that "GFK sold off a lot of their fun divisions." The Ipsos and YouGov sales back the second point with €420 million of disposals, and NIQ's prospectus now describes the unit by one industry, tech and durables measurement.
Staff criticized the platform from inside early on. A March 2020 Glassdoor review titled "Newron joke," from a London employee listing the title chief technology officer, read: "So far the newron product is failing... Literally get terrible feedback everytime Customer feedback is terrible too." A June 2018 review from a US employee of 3+ years said GfK kept "proposing same methodologies over and over again that aren’t compelling to clients."
Churn followed the merger. A product security analyst in Sofia, one of the firm's offices in Eastern Europe, wrote on Glassdoor in December 2024:
"Layoffs and resignations have become frequent and expected. The overall environment is highly dynamic but leaves employees feeling expendable."
Former GfK product security analyst, Sofia, Glassdoor, December 2024
The same reviewer credited "Amazing, smart coworkers and supportive teammates who create a collaborative work environment," and the 2018 US reviewer listed "Smart colleagues" among the pros. Employee reviews split along that line: praise for colleagues, complaints about management and pay.
NIQ's own accounts put a number on the structural changes. Its 2025 results list $126.3 million of GfK integration costs for 2024 and $62.3 million for 2025, a line that covers "employee separation costs, consulting fees and integration costs."
For customers, the effect depends on which unit holds the account. A commenter on the July 2024 r/Marketresearch thread put it plainly: "some teams are being combined with existing NIQ teams while it’s business as usual for other teams, just under a new name."
↑ FACT SHEETGfK against Circana, YouGov Shopper and Ipsos
Most buyers short-list GfK against firms that cover overlapping slices of the same work. An insights practitioner on r/Marketresearch in March 2021 described the usual mix: "Often in my industry that is data from Kantar/Nielsen/GFK on purchasing data."
Circana
Circana, formed from IRI and NPD, says over 7,000 brands use it across 26 industries, consumer technology among them. It publishes no rate card either, and the only public prices our Circana review found were federal contract records.
Pick Circana when the US is the market that matters and grocery tracking sits in the same contract. Pick GfK when business strategies span dozens of countries and channels outside North America. Our retail market intelligence guide maps both sides of that buying decision.
YouGov Shopper
This is GfK's old household panel, now YouGov's, covering 18 European countries and 100,000+ households. It earned £129.7 million of revenue in the twelve months to January 2026, per M&A Insights, and YouGov put it under strategic review in 2026, per Research Live. It wins on grocery basket tracking in Europe and has no point-of-sale feed for electronics.
Ipsos
Ipsos, the market research group that ranked just behind GfK in 2010, owns the custom research services that made up GfK's Custom Research Business until 2018, bought for €105 million: customer experience, innovation testing, health and public affairs.
Hire Ipsos consultants for a bespoke study of a target audience. The syndicated tech and durables tracker stayed with GfK, and now NIQ. Our market research tools ranking and retail analytics ranking cover the self-serve end of both jobs.
Frequently asked questions
What does GfK stand for?
Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung, German for "society for consumer research." The market research firm used "Growth from Knowledge" as a brand claim from 2000.
Does GfK still exist?
Yes, as "GfK - An NIQ Company." The gfknewron platform and the other GfK solutions run under NIQ, and the audience measurement content moves under the NIQ brand before the end of 2026. On LinkedIn the GfK page still lists 5K-10K employees.
Is GfK owned by Nielsen?
GfK belongs to NIQ, which an Advent affiliate bought from Nielsen Holdings in March 2021 and which now trades on the NYSE. Nielsen kept TV and audience measurement.
What is GfK data?
The short answer: sell-out figures from retail partners for tech and durables, buyer questionnaires, studies of consumer trends and audience panels. Buyers use it to understand consumer behavior, make purchasing decisions for stock, create plans for each of their channels and set prices. Success gets measured against the same panel, delivering one shared yardstick for retailers and manufacturers.
Verdict
GfK is for manufacturers and retailers of consumer electronics, mobile phones, computers and appliances that trade in many countries and need weekly sell-out & price figures to set pricing strategies and channel strategies, and to defend them in a board performance review. The 180 million+ products tracked and the 50+ country reach justify the 90 on depth.
Large companies with procurement staff, two-to-five-year budgets and analysts to run the login get the full value and the 85 on enterprise fit.
It isn't for a small brand, a startup or a 10-person department. There's no published gfknewron price, training sits behind the paywall, and terms run for years, hence 20 on price transparency, 30 on small-buyer fit and 25 on contract flexibility. Those teams should start with the tools in our trend research ranking and consumer intelligence guide.
Mid-sized companies with expansion plans should ask two things before signing. First, which NIQ unit will support the account after the 2024 Glassdoor reports of layoffs. Second, how the price review clause reads next to NIQ's own prospectus language about product enhancements supporting price increases. Stability scores 55 for that reason, and the future of the GfK name after 2026 is NIQ's call.
