Every reach measure set a record in 2026 while launches fell to the slowest first-half pace in eight years.

YouTube ranks first on all three platform trackers, and the 7-point spread between them comes from sample size and survey timing.

Podcasts hold nearly 5% of digital media time and under 1% of digital ad spend, per IAB.

58% of Americans aged 12 and over consumed a podcast in the past month, or 167 million people, according to Edison Research at SSRS's Infinite Dial 2026. Weekly reach hit 45%. Both are all-time highs, and US podcast ad revenue reached $2.862 billion in 2025, up 17.6%, per IAB and PwC.

The same months turned podcasting into a video medium, and the trackers count it differently. YouTube is the service weekly podcast listeners use most at 37%, 40% or 44%, depending on the survey, and the catalogue holds 3.75 million to 4.92 million podcasts.

These are the podcast industry statistics published in 2026, US data unless noted, for marketers buying podcast ads, podcasters & analysts.

How many people listen to podcasts in 2026

80% of Americans 12+ have ever listened to or watched a podcast, or 230 million people, per the Infinite Dial 2026 release of 13 March. The share of monthly podcast listeners rose to 58% and past-week listening to 45%.

Watching now sits inside the audience count. 57% of Americans 12+ have both listened to and watched a podcast, 21% only listened and 2% only watched, per PPC Land's write-up. Edison added "watched" to its question in 2025, so part of the jump from 2024 is definitional.

"Video isn't replacing podcast audio. It's expanding the tent."

Megan Lazovick, Vice President, Edison Research at SSRS, in the Infinite Dial 2026 release, 13 March 2026.

A second tracker reads lower. FMR and Eastlan put weekly podcast listeners at 40% of adults aged 25 to 64 in 2026, from 24% in 2024, on a 1,000-person sample. The 5-point gap reflects the age base, sample size and Edison's inclusion of watching.

Outside the US, 43% of UK adults listen to podcasts or watch them monthly, per Sounds Profitable's Advertising Landscape UK study (via PPC Land). 55% of Australians tune in monthly, up from 52%, per the 2026 Infinite Dial Australia, which counts everyone aged 10 and up.

Podcast listener demographics by age groups, gender and ethnicity

Americans aged 35 to 54 are the likeliest to listen to podcasts monthly, at 68%, ahead of 12 to 34 at 64% and 55+ at 44%, per Edison's 2026 figures in Radio Ink. The 12 to 34 band slipped from 66% in 2025, the one decline among the three age groups.

Bar chart of US monthly podcast reach by age: 12 to 34 rose from 55% in 2023 to 64% in 2026, 35 to 54 from 51% to 68%, and 55 and over from 21% to 44%, with 58% of all Americans 12+ monthly in 2026.
The 55+ group more than doubled its monthly reach between 2023 and 2026.

The 55+ line grew fastest, from 21% in 2023, against 55% for 12 to 34 and 51% for 35 to 54 that year, per the Infinite Dial chart in the VAB audio deck.

Gen Z listeners lean toward the screen, and 37% of Gen Z consume podcasts via video more often than audio, per Cumulus Media and Signal Hill data cited at the IAB Podcast Upfront. Among adults 18 to 34, podcasts take 33% of ad-supported audio time, against 20% for all adults and 12% for adults 50+, per Edison's Share of Ear in the VAB deck.

Those splits map cleanly onto demographic market segmentation. Nearly two thirds of the audience for podcasts launched in 2026 is aged 25 to 34, per Podchaser data in Podcast News Daily.

Where people listen to podcasts: YouTube leads and Apple Podcasts holds 5% to 12%

YouTube is the preferred platform on every 2026 tracker. Edison Podcast Metrics puts it at 37% of weekly consumers, up from 31% two years earlier. Cumulus Media and Signal Hill Insights put it at 44%, with Spotify at 14% and Apple at 5%.

Bar chart of the share of weekly US podcast consumers who use YouTube most: Cumulus Media and Signal Hill 44%, Triton 40%, Edison Infinite Dial deck 39%, Edison Podcast Metrics 37%, plus share of podcast listening time from Edison Share of Ear Q4 2025: YouTube 32%, Spotify 25%, Apple Podcasts 20%.
Four surveys give four shares between 37% and 44%, and time spent gives a lower 32%.

Time share trails the "use most" share because heavy Spotify and Apple users log more hours each. Among people who watch podcasts on video platforms, Google's service takes the lion's share at 72%, with Instagram and TikTok at 10% each, per FMR and Eastlan.

The other platforms are adding video podcast content. Over 500 million Spotify users have streamed a video podcast, up nearly 50% in a year, per the Spotify Newsroom. Apple launched HLS video in Apple Podcasts in February 2026, with transcripts across over 125 million podcast episodes in 13 languages.

Netflix added podcasts in January, and by April 62% of weekly consumers knew it. Rob Walch estimates Netflix lists 1 in 67,547 podcasts, per Podnews.

Google Podcasts and the podcast listening apps that replaced it

Google said on its video blog in December 2023 that Google Podcasts would serve US listeners through March 2024, with subscription exports open through July 2024. Any share for that app in older podcast stats predates these surveys by two years.

Listener behavior: 67% of podcast time happens at home

Podcast listening habits and listener behavior moved indoors. 67% of all podcast time is spent at home, per Edison's Share of Ear as reported by Westwood One, and the device split shifted between Q4 2017 and Q1 2026.

  • Mobile: 71% of podcast time, from 68%.
  • Desktop or laptop: 15%, from 26%.
  • Internet-connected TV: 11%, from 3%.

On the phone itself, iPhones account for 61.8% of downloads from Buzzsprout-hosted shows and Android phones for 22.4%, per Buzzsprout's global stats for August 2026.

TV grew under the radar. The share of weekly consumers who listen to podcasts on a TV climbed from 1% in 2021 to 13% in Q1 2026, per Edison data in the VAB deck, and 38% of weekly consumers use a smart TV for podcasts, up from 32%, per Cumulus and Signal Hill.

Audio still leads during commutes and chores. Audio podcast use peaks in the morning at 40%, and household chores (41%), exercise (37%) and driving (37%) top the situations where fans pick audio content, per Acast's Podcast Pulse via Radio Ink. 64% of podcast fans call podcasts a daily companion, per Acast.

Daily podcast consumers spend 5 hours 11 minutes a day with all audio, and podcasts take 36% of it, more than one hour and 50 minutes, per Edison's Podcast Consumer 2026. Listener behavior crosses formats too, with 63% of fans switching format mid-show, per Acast, and the Podcast Atlas found near-identical completion for audio and video.

"The industry spent years arguing over formats, but audiences moved on long ago."

Greg Glenday, CEO, Acast, in the Podcast Pulse 2026 release, 17 September 2026.

How many podcasts exist: 3.75 million to 4.92 million, depending on the index

Podscan tracks 4,922,108 podcasts as of 30 September 2026. Podcast Index holds over 4.7 million podcasts, counting a show once it has three episodes, per the VAB deck. Listen Notes tracked 3,753,207 in early April, per Inside Radio, and Apple Podcasts lists nearly 3 million, per Podcast Industry Insights.

Bar chart of total podcasts tracked by index: Podscan 4,922,108, Podcast Index over 4.7 million, Listen Notes 3,753,207 and Apple Podcasts nearly 3 million, plus new shows launched January to June 2026: Podchaser 153,767 and Listen Notes 82,642.
The catalogue count moves by 1.17 million shows depending on how each index filters dead and fake feeds.

Each index applies its own filter to the same public RSS feeds. Listen Notes strips deleted, empty and AI-generated feeds, and removed nearly 63,000 fake AI podcasts over 13 months, per Inside Audio Marketing.

Listen Notes counted 519,708 podcasts active so far in 2026, 1.8 times the 290,906 active in all of 2025. Podscan counts podcasts as active after a release in the last 90 days.

New podcasts and how long they last

Listen Notes counted 82,642 launches in the first half of 2026. Podchaser counted 153,767, the lowest January to June total in eight years, down 14%, and estimates at least 2.5% look like automated content mills.

41.7% of those 153,767 podcasts had stopped publishing by 30 June, per Podchaser. Of podcasts that reached one month, 27.9% are still active, and of podcasts past 10 years, 54.7% are, per Podscan. On Podscan's count, a podcast past 10 years is about twice as likely to still be publishing as one that reached a month.

Catalogue depth and hosting

Listen Notes counts about 192 million episodes, with over 14 million released from January to June 2026, and about 35,000 go up on an average day, per Podcast Index. iHeartRadio's 24/7 feed posted 689 in four weeks, against a median of 22 across Triton's 150-show August chart.

Two figures in wide circulation carry the wrong label. The 584.1 million worldwide listener figure is an eMarketer estimate for 2025 that surfaces in secondary roundups, and the VAB deck labels Podcast Index's 4.7 million "active" though Podcast Index counts any show with three episodes. The secondary market intelligence guide covers tracing a number to its originator.

"Therefore, nothing on YouTube is a valid podcast."

Daniel J. Lewis, creator of Podcast Industry Insights, on its video podcast statistics page, as of September 2026.

Some trackers also sell ads. Podnews describes Triton Digital as iHeart-owned, and iHeart ranks first in Triton's download chart.

Average podcast audience size and how many listeners an episode gets

The average podcast reaches an estimated 2,048 listeners and the median 1,100, across 1,496,394 podcasts with audience data on Podscan. 1,297,821 sit under 1,500 listeners and 165 above 1 million, which pulls the mean up by almost 2x. Podscan's listener numbers are model estimates.

1,119 of the 153,767 podcasts launched in 2026 (0.7%) reached a Podchaser Power Score of 50, and 13 reached 1 million listeners. How many listeners a single episode gets has three answers, one per counting rule.

  • Downloads: filtered file requests under IAB Tech Lab rules. iHeart Audience Network averaged 65,896,118 weekly downloads in August 2026, 4.4 times Audioboom's 14,940,675, per the Triton ranker via PPC Land.
  • Views: Google's video service counts a view from the first frame. Podtrac found podcast episodes keep 64% of counted views as engaged views.
  • Inflation: IAB puts the zero-second view inflation at roughly 1.8x in its Upfront recap.

Rankings split the same way, with 28 of the 200 shows in Triton's listener survey on its 150-show downloads chart. IAB Tech Lab opened version 2.3 of its measurement guidelines on 21 July 2026 to cover video on open RSS, and the jury's still out on one audience size metric for both formats.

For sizing a show before buying a host read, the media monitoring tools ranking covers tools that track podcast mentions alongside broadcast and print, and the audience segmentation tools ranking compares platforms that split an audience by age and behavior.

Most popular podcast genre: true crime at Edison, comedy at Triton

True crime edged ahead of comedy as the top topic among weekly consumers in H1 2026, the first change at the top since Edison Podcast Metrics began in 2019, per SSRS. Triton's February 2026 report measures monthly genre reach and puts comedy first, so the two don't see eye to eye on the most popular podcast genre.

Podcast genres, TritonMonthly reach, adults 18+
Comedy42%
News27%
Society and culture23%
Sports18%
True crime16%

On Triton's count, comedy, news, society and culture take the top three podcast genres. Globally, news podcasts reach 11%, per the Reuters Institute Digital News Report 2026. On the supply side, Podscan lists 17,127 true crime podcasts, under 1% of the catalogue, against 829,495 in society and culture.

The top three US podcasts by weekly reach in Q2 2026 were The Joe Rogan Experience, Crime Junkie and The Daily, in Edison's Top 50.

"I think podcasts are more personality-driven than ever before."

Robin Hilton, producer, NPR Music, at Podcast Movement NYC, as reported by The Podglomerate, September 2026.

Podcast advertising revenue: $2.862 billion in 2025 and a $3.40 billion forecast

US podcast advertising revenue reached $2.862 billion in 2025, up 17.6%, from $105.7 million in 2015, per the IAB/PwC report covered by Radio Ink.

Global podcast market totals in circulation, such as $39.63 billion for 2025, come from market-research resellers with no primary release. The table sizes the podcast advertising market from US publishers, and their methods differ.

Spend accelerated through the year, per Magellan AI. The top 10 advertisers spent about $128 million in Q2 2026, and 1,297 first-time brands hit the ground running at an average of $31,400 each. Ad load averaged 8.75% of episode content, up from 8.11%, and true crime carried the heaviest at 11.19%.

Podcasts hold nearly 5% of digital media time and under 1% of digital ad spend, per IAB. The advertising industry statistics report puts podcast advertising beside every other channel, and the ad intelligence software ranking covers tools that track where competitors place ads.

Ad effectiveness and trust

76% of weekly consumers 13+ have acted after hearing podcast ads, per Edison Research. 73% of audio podcast listeners are fully or mostly attentive, against 67% for streaming music and 57% for radio, per Acast.

  • Trust: 42% of fans trust brand recommendations from podcasters, up 9 points, against 29% for YouTubers, per Acast.
  • Purchase: 15% buy right after a video podcast ad against 10% for audio, per Sounds Profitable's Podcast Atlas.
  • Reach: moving 5% of a $42 million TV plan to podcasts lifted reach among adults 18 to 54 by 41% (Nielsen, via Radio Ink).

The 42% figure measures trust in the podcast host's own recommendation, the voice of a host-read ad. Sponsors show up on 3.8% of 2,870,547 podcasts Podscan analyzed.

How podcasters make money

Audio ads still pay podcasters more per download than video. Audioboom's audio monetization runs about $71 RPM and video under half that, per PPC Land, and the company posted H1 2026 revenue of $45.7 million, per its earnings call. Our CPM calculator runs the same per-1,000 arithmetic from the advertiser's side.

"Our current monetization engine for audio-only generates around $71 RPM on average. For video it's less than half of that."

Stuart Last, CEO, Audioboom, in a LinkedIn post quoted by PPC Land, 15 January 2026.

Platform payouts fill part of the gap for podcast content on video. Monthly payouts to Spotify Partner Program podcasts are up over a third since eligibility widened in January, per the Spotify Newsroom. 21% of weekly consumers gave money to a podcast in the past year, and US live-event attendance rose from 20% to 36% of listeners, at $268 per event.

Podcast industry trends for 2026: video parity, streamers and AI

82% of weekly consumers watch video podcasts against 78% who listen audio-only, the first crossover, from 73% and 89% in 2023, per Edison. 88% of the podcast audience consumes both formats, per Acast's 4,300 respondents in 13 markets. The preference for actively watching rose from 30% in April 2022 to 49% in April 2026, per Cumulus and Signal Hill.

71% of creators have jumped on the bandwagon with video versions, and 4% of the top 500 podcasts are HLS-enabled, per IAB. 1.5% of new 2026 podcasts had measurable YouTube audiences, per Podchaser.

"Video's become the front door to podcasting."

Jason Adamski, Director of the Media Center, IAB, at the IAB Podcast Upfront, 16 September 2026, as reported by Inside Audio Marketing.

62% of weekly consumers see AI as a threat to podcast credibility and 69% approve of it for research, per Edison, and nearly two thirds of podcasters use generative AI for production (Descript, cited by IAB). The AI statistics report tracks that adoption across other industries, and the video game industry statistics and esports industry statistics reports cover the rest of the entertainment time budget.

Global reach outside the US

The Spotify Partner Program added over 35 markets on 17 September 2026, including Italy, Spain, Brazil and Mexico. English accounts for 60.8% of all podcasts on Listen Notes and Spanish for 10.5%.

A podcast strategy built on 2026 numbers

  • Publish to YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts, since the video platform leads every tracker and Apple holds 20% of time spent.
  • Keep titles under seven words, since a search engine shows about 55 characters, Bruce Chamoff of World Podcast Network told Podcast Movement.
  • Cut clips, since 81% say a clip led them to an episode (IAB), and topic (64%) and the podcast host (53%) lead show choice, per SSRS.
  • Track 90-day active status, engaged views and filtered downloads monthly.

The publishing industry statistics report adds new data on the print side of the same attention budget.
